2000 f350 psd pulling 6000 lbs. if you look at my last two threads trans. went at 75k. in the shop being rebuilt. used my wife's 2002 psd excursion to pull the same trailer up the same hill, on a 70 degree day. both trucks have synthetic fluid in them. this truck has the trans. temp. idiot gauge on cluster. At the 5 mile marke guage started climbing off center mark where it normaly is and by the 8 mile mark of a 10 mile climb I had to pull off and let cool down. Another 50 yrds. and it would have been out of the normal range and through the yellow into the red. so...... I'm thinking I need to drop this job on the mountain and beef up both truck trans. cooling abilities. Should i add a cooler to the system? Or replace the exsisting cooler with a bigger unit? I like the idea of less connections for lesser chance of petential leaks. What cooler is the best bang for the buck? Is the later modle 6.0 liter trans cooler the way to go? Thanks in advance for all the good help you guys provide.
The 6.0 cooler is a great option, WAY bigger than stock. I got one from a wrecked truck for $40. You just remove the stock cooler and drop the 6.0 in its place. There are also tons of aftermarket coolers out there if you want to go that route (cheaper for a new aftermarket than a new 6.0L cooler).
BTW, don't trust the factory "idiot light" trans temp gauge. By the time it shows any significant temp change the damage is likely already done. Check out this link.
was the 6.0 a direct bolt in and how much bigger/ thicker was it?
The 6.0 is almost a direct bolt in. The 7.3 uses 3/8" trans lines and the 6.0 uses 1/2", so you need some 1/2" trans rated hose and a couple of adapter fittings. You also need either longer bolts for the bottom 2 mounts, or a fender washer and remove the rubber grommets to get the bolts to fit. I'll see if I can find a pic, but the 6.0 cooler is about 3x as big as the OEM. There are 2 versions of the 6.0 cooler too- 26 row and 31 row. I have the 26 row waiting to go in, I helped a friend install a 31 row in his. Either one is plenty big enough, and I hear that the 26 row gives you a bit more room down low for routing the 1/2" hose without worrying about kinking it.
Check ebay 1st. Ive seen a couple on there but got snatched up pretty quickly. The plumbing of the lines and the shear size of the unit is the only thing different. Easily adapted though.
