You're saying you read that if you have the rear step you can't use the DeeZee tailgate assist? That is 100% not true. Tons of people out there with it, and now, I'm one of them!
I had one on 2015 as well. I used the nut setup from DeeZee so I didn't have to dig into the tailgate. With the step my tailgate was heavier which made it drop a little faster.
If I would have had issues I probably would have done the above fix. Mine wasn't as tight as I would have liked however it was tight enough that it worked.
I have the step (as can be seen in the video), and agree, it's heavy when lowering. I do think the drop speed is perfect.
As for getting into the tailgate to get a nut on the deezee ball stud, it was pretty easy as the side of the tailgate (inside) is open, and you can put a wrench down there and get the bolt started, then tighten it up. I have an inspection camera, so that helped me see what was going on.

I was referring to the pop and lock (hence the quote from the other post), not the lift assist as I have that also on mine, just the pop and lock
Bought one, I followed the instructions and had no issues with installation, works great. Not as slow as some of the vids that others have posted but definitely does the job. Highly recommend.
Ive had mine for 3 months now. The clip on the end of the shock keeps slipping off. The part it attaches to in the tail gate is loose.... I'll have to figure out how to tighten it.

exactly why I didn't use the nutsert. The stud is metric. Just open up the tailgate and get a locknut on it. Mine has been in about 4 months and it's perfect.

My attachment points were all solid - and it still popped off each time the gate was opened. It wasn't a travel limit issue, it never popped off if you lowered it slowly - which kind of defeated the purpose of the whole thing, lol. Before I got around to contacting customer service the piston jammed and the ram snapped in half. Into the trash it went. The mounts for it are still nice and solid though.

If you have the step, pull off the plastic liner (5 push clips and about 8 hex bolts). I had to put a nut inside a wrench and put it on something long enough to line it up and hold it in place while I inserted the stud. Then when the stud started to catch, the open end wrench would hit the tailgate wall to hold it in place while I tightened. Then I just wiggled the wrench off. This is how I did it on a 2015.
