This particular one does not have a ball and there is no issue with anything coming loose.
Hope this helps someone looking at these.
I've seen that style, and actually prefer it. It's not been in stock, but looks like it is now. I like how it mounts at the tailgate latch, and the extra plate for reinforcement. But it says it doesn't fit an 2015 F350. It's for models up to 2007, and I haven't been able to find one for later models.
I thought I'd share this with folks here...One of my concerns with this setup is the Nutsert holding up and not looseing. The post just won't always stay tight. For some it does, most actually, but some have issues. I wanted to research how to do the nutsert right, and was reading more about it and found a great post on an F150 forum.
The guy bought a larger diameter 10mm ball post, and through bolted it on the tailgate, vs using the nutsert. Way better! A much more solid design. I see why DeeZee didn't go this route, as folks would have to pull their tailgate access cover off, but if you can, this is the way to go. These are the posts I bought, which are larger size threads but the same size head (so I read, I will see for sure when I get them). The larger size fills the hole better too.
I installed the Stabilus today from the link above. Super easy install and I love it. Hardest part was getting the tail light out to remove the rubber bumper! Didn't want to break the light and didn't realize I just needed to pull on it. And that rubber bumper? Gone with zero issues.
Ok, add me to the list of folks that can't seem to get that stupid nutsert thing to work properly and tighten up. The bolt keeps unthreading itself from the threaded part of the nutsert. Frustrating. I really want to put a nut on the back side instead of using the nutsert, but I don't have as large of a hole in my tailgate as I've seen online, so I can't get a wrench or anything down the hole to get it behind the hole in the tailgate.
Any suggestions? I gave up for today. Need to think about it.
That's what I tried, multiple times. I made sure it was set at 3/4" from washer. I held the bolt and turned the nut. The bolt kept unscrewing. I'm going to try harder to get a nut on the back side inside the tailgate tomorrow.
Doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason as to why some guys have issues and some don't. It worked perfectly on my 04 F150 and I am hoping I get the same luck on my '15.
just ordered a dz for my truck. I got tired of slamming my tail gate. Hopefully don't have issues.
Well you may have an issue with the stupid blind nut/nutsert. I tried again, 3 times, and couldn't get it to bite. Tried tape, and still nothing. I did notice the ball bearings in the little plastic spinner thing weren't moving, so I got them moving, and still nothing.
I bought some aftermarket 10mm ball studs with 5/16-18 threads for the tailgate mount, vs using what came with the DeeZee for two reasons:
1. It's shorter overall, so the shock won't be as likely to rub anything
2. I could easily get stainless washers and lock nuts for it locally, vs the metric threads on the ball stud that came with the deezee.
I am not giving up on getting a nut on the backside of the ball stud inside the tailgate. I don't have as large of an access hole as the F150s that I've seen online, but I can get to the back of the hole, so it's just a matter of persistence.
The Red Loctite solved my problem at least until I traded it in. So that was about a year. I really had to crank down on it to ensure full engagement of the nutsert with the Red on it (after it loosened up twice). To the point where I thought it was gona pull the threads out. Let is set up for a day before hooking up the ram.
The nut on the back side sounds like a good solution as well. So does a beefier stud. So does TIG welding the dam thing to the gate. I swear doesn't anyone test their products before spitting them out the consumer??? This product likely wasn't intended for liftgate tailgates.
I finally got around to finishing this yesterday, sort of. On the Super Duty tailgate, I was able to tape a wrench to a long screwdriver and get the setup along the side of the tailgate to get the ball mount on with a nut on the backside. I didn't use the one that came with the DeeZee as it was longer than the one I bought. I figured lower profile would have less of an issue of hitting the side of the bed if anything came out. Problem is, you need the extra length so the shock clears the rubber bumper bracket on the side of the tailgate. So I had to take it off. I'll put the DZ one on tonight. But I did get to test it a bit last night, and I cannot wait to have this installed. Tailgate came down so nice and smooth and slow.
I have heard that the tailgates with the rear steps, this does not work...I do not have first hand knowledge, but I read another post before advising about this...
