Thanx for the all of the tips on the setup. I got my DeeZee in the mail today, and install went very easy. My kit even came with blue locktite. I may have gotten lucky on the blind nut install, as mine locked up with ease. Of course we'll see how it is in 3 months of use.
Oh, and I have the Lariat tailgate with the step and camera, although the gate comes down still a touch quick at the start, it does do a great job of then slowing and bring the gate down in a controlled fashion. May still be quicker than some would want, but it beats it trying to fall on your head if it were to slip of your hand.
theres no chance at even getting close pulling the plastic piece off. Theres a small hole i put my hand through but theres metal blocking the end of the tail gate where the DZ mount is located. Its all sheet metal. Im gonna have my dad wield it to the tail gate.
Do you have the assist step in your tailgate? My tailgate had holes I could fish a wrench through, mounted onto a long board. I actually think I went in right at the latch on the side. When the latch is in the closed position I was able to get the wrench through there as well.
mine has been installed and gets used multiple times a day and it hasn't come loose one bit yet. its been at least 6 months i want to say.
edit: actually, it's been a little over a year i've had mine installed on my 04 dually.
i still have the Hopkins Easy-Lift torsion bar type thing that's supposed to make the tail gate A LOT lighter when lifting it back UP, but i can't get it to work on my dually, specifically because of the stock light bar in between the tailgate and the bumper. it seems that it is right in the way of the easy-lift torsion/spring bar. i'm gonna try and install it with the light removed one day to test it out, but i don't want to leave the light removed for good, i like how it looks at night.
After a couple of weeks I finally had my tail gate shock fixed. The bottom mount that goes on the tailgate portion became loose after a month of use. The hole that the bottom mount goes into isn't perfectly round, more like an oval. I think this is a contributing factor of the bottom mount becoming dislodged. So I went on to Az to visit my parents and do some shooting. 1 min with my dads welder and a can of silver spray paint, you can't tell the different.
For roughly $45.00 with shipping this is a no brainer, just placed my order
that's still a good price for the IMO major added convenience you get, but i think mine was around $26 brand new, i happen to find one locally at a 4WheelParts store.
Just curious as to why DeeZee says in the instructions that it does not work with the step in tailgates. Maybe it falls a little faster due to the weight difference...

I have the tailgate with the step inside. I think this is the issue I had. Also the hole that your suppose to use in the tailgate isn't perfectly round. Its more like an oval. This caused my mount to slip. Eventually getting loose to the point the shock wouldn't stay one. So I decided to wield it. Now I have no issues.

Here is my Super Duty tailgate in action with the Dee Zee Assist Shock. (I installed it over a year ago)
