How many of you guys have the step in the tailgate with this assist shock?
Works just fine on my 2012 CCLB with step. Was a little hard to get the nut to catch, but has stayed tight since install. Catches on open just fine as well.
Just curious as to why DeeZee says in the instructions that it does not work with the step in tailgates. Maybe it falls a little faster due to the weight difference...
I think part of the problem with the nuts needing to be re-tightened is not getting them tight enough in the first place. When installing mine there were several points where it seemed like it was tight but I kept going with the wrench and it continued to get tighter. At one point it would not tighten anymore and that's when I stopped obviously. Haven't had an issue since.
Its sort of a crappy design, it works... But this little bolt that goes inside is suppose to be able to handle the weight of the tail gate. I dunno I would still recommend the product just wish I could tighten a nut on it. The way my tail gate is I can't access the part where the bolt goes into without cutting into sheet metal.
Well that's nice and all, but when a re-seller has a higher price than the manufacturer's website retail and the manufacturer does not have any such statement about the step, then I'm inclined to ignore the 3rd party.
Further, I have the step and it works flawlessly on mine...
I emailed them asking about that little disclaimer and they said they put that in there because they were getting so many concerns about the strut not really catching the heavy tailgate and slowing it down.
The gate opens a little faster than I would like however the strut slows it enough there is no bouncing or jarring. There are some people who put a second strut on the gate. If you do add the second strut make sure you also put a hose clamp on the tail gate hinge so it doesn't pop out.
Got mine installed this past weekend - as most know the Platinums come stock with the step - the thing works great, no complaints, slows the tailgate down nicely. The "turn the nut 10 times" deal was a little weird, not sure I understand the measurement either. I tried with the instructions, 2 turns and the thing fell apart. I messed with it on my own and it tightened right up. We'll see how it operates at 10 degrees this winter, but for now works great - satisfied customer for sure.
