I entered my truck info (2001 F250) and this is what it showed. Maybe this is incorrect.
The main difference, the compressed length of the one you are looking at, for $20 is 205.5mm. The compressed length of the one I found by searching for a 2015 F250 (because my 2016 returns NOTHING) for $36 is 201.5mm. That could POSSIBLY cause a compatibility issue.
The $20 goes out 70mm longer, so that'll be fine. The rod and tube diameters are the same and the pounds of force are the same. So none of those should be an issue.
It all comes down to those 4 millimeters.
When I click on the compatibility tab and then "Ford" it looks like the $20 one is primarily for F150s, while the $36 one is for Super Duties.

It makes sense that one for an aluminum tailgate might be lighter and cost less, but verify part numbers. I've seen lots of parts that are common to both Super Duty and F-150 trucks priced much higher for the Super Duty trucks if you search by application.
This is especially true for Triton engine parts such as COP coils, lash adjusters and fuel injectors. Same exact part number but almost 2x the money if you look for V-10 vs V-8 parts at some suppliers!
I installed the Hopkins torsion-rod type assist 6 years ago and am very happy with it. Mine came from etrailer.com. I've shopped there for 16 years and always had great service.

I had to drill one hole by the latch on the box and one in the bottom of the tailgate. The instructions said to have someone help with the tailgate (you have to take it off) but I did it by myself. No nutserts are involved.
Anyone had the same issue? It opens fine, but when I close the tailgate it`s a bit hard and I can feel that those parts are rubbing on each other. That will wear out my shock body for sure if I use the tailgate a lot ( which I do not now actually ).
I was thinking on hitting that metal with a hammer and bend it back so it won`t rub on the shock. A bit brutal maybe, but I do not need that piece of metal anymore.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
1. Bent ball posts on the tailgate (the part that screws into the nutsert)
2. Removal of the rubber bumper - isn't that designed to help with tailgate alignment when closed, so it doesn't slide to far one way or the other? Does removing it cause any long term issues?
3. Can you really install 2, putting one on the passenger side? I would think having balanced shocks would be much better than one.
4. Rubbing of the shock on the body or tailgate of the truck.
Thanks
Don't know if you classify this as an issue but in extremely cold weather (sub zero) the tailgate takes an very long time to open.
Aside from the above two issues I love it, no more tailgate getting away from you and slamming/banging open.
Did you both have to remove the rubber bumper? I feel like removing that could allow the tailgate to shift in its opening. No?
1. The nutsert design is absolutely horrible. They could not have come up with a worse design.
2. The rubber bumpers have to be removed. I tried leaving them on and you can't shut the tailgate. It's no big deal though.
3. I added #2 on the passenger side and had to drill out the hole to about half an inch, maybe larger, I can't remember. Just enough to fit the POS through.
4. We know the bolt likes to work itself loose, I figure having 2 shocks would reduce torsional stress on the mount and make it last longer. So far it's working fine. The tailgate doesn't drop much slower, but you can tell there's not as much stress on each mount individually.
5. Now that you have one installed on the passenger side, you have to secure the hinge of the tailgate. It will want to pop out as you raise and lower the tailgate. I used the tried and true hose clamp.
May 50000 miles I had no issues with the tail gate assist other than the periodic tightening.
The tailgate did come down faster than I wanted but it was slow enough you could let the gate just drop.
