Just got my Dee Zee Tailgate assist installed. Pretty straight forward/easy installation. That is with the exception of the Threaded Insert that goes in the tailgate itself. I tried their "Helpful Hints" without success, and since it is metric thread I could not use my Nutsert/Slimsert tool. What I ended up doing, and you can file in the "For What It Is Worth" Department is to place two drywall screws between their installation tool and Threadsert and tightening the nut down to hold in place. the threads of the screws dug into the insert enough to keep it from spinning, allowing me to install the insert. I have attached a couple of pictures. The insert in the pictures is not what comes in the kit, it is one of my Threadserts for reference only.
Forgot to add, it works GREAT! No more tailgate slamming open/down.
Ordered mine last week because of this thread, tracking has it being delivered Thurs. the 23rd. For some reason I thought the truck was coming with some kind of tail gate assist, wrong again.
John
holy crap didn't even cross my mind that something like this existed! ordering now...do you only run 1 on one side? edit- just saw on the site it says only 1 needed per vehicle.
even though im only 28, after 2 neck surgeries, and not working out in years, im way out of shape and frankly putting the tailgate down sometimes takes the wind out of me...i feel like im 60 sometimes...lol
I installed mine after one of the kids roughly 5 years old opened the tailgate and got slammed to the ground. Easy to open the tailgate with your hands full and step away to let it down.

i too couldn't at first even figure out how the thing worked, then when i did (i admit, had to youtube their installation video), i still couldn't keep it from spinning. so i just gave up for the night, it's late and i'm tired so i will do it tomorrow when i can see better also. if i can't get it to hold in place, i will try your trick.
question, i assume i can get another insert from a hardware store, or even just one direct from DeeZee, when i get my 08+ tailgate? probably won't be for a while so i want to install this now so i can use it, and when i get the new tailgate i will just need a new nutsert thingy.
