Thinking about the engine break-in. Engine had oil pre-installed from the factory. My plan is to drive for 1000 mi then change to Mobil 1 5w-30, then change again at 3000.

Your last engine lasted nearly 20 years, and a lubrication-related failure isn't what killed it. This is typical, even for those who follow the factory maintenance schedule.
Change early if it makes you feel good, but I don't think your engine will care. It will likely outlast the rest of the van either way.

If it lasts another 20 years it will definitely outlast me! That's what I'm hoping for.

That is exactly what I would do other then I just use whatever oil I can get my hands on.
Others might disagree on this and it's just my opinion. When I rebuild an Engine (mostly Diesel tractors) after the initial set it up and cam break-in I find the the biggest heaviest load to put on the engine and work it for a few hours then change the oil. Haven't had one blowup or use a drop of oil yet.
400 miles on the new engine/transmission and everything is working fine. Now I need to cleanup a few loose ends. 6-Way drivers seat motors need attention and I need to replace the drivers side power door lock mechanism.
I have purchased a new lock actuator but the seat motors are a different story. Seem this is an common issue with a lot of trucks in this age group. I have searched the forum with little success. Think I'll start a new thread to solve this problem if no one know the answer.
