Full resto finally

Well the old beast has been beat, used, and abused long enough. Suspension bushings r worn out. There is a lot of floor rust that has grown since the last ran out of time repair. And I really want a flat bed. So I've decided to do a full restoration and modification build. I traded my mustang for a 97 f250 ext can psd auto with some boltons so I have another pig to move this one around.

To start with I have seen very few good build threads on this so I'll have lots of pics but it will be a long process.

So enough bs on to the plan. The Idi will be rebuilt unless I can get a deal on a dt360 somehow. I will be doing a 4 corner air bag setup with semi truck bags and front and rear 3 links. A donor truck has been located with pristine rockers and floors. I'm waiting for it to get over here at this point.

So I have pulled the tool box and headache rack and swapped it to the pad cause I love them but can't use them on a flatbed. Now I'm going to do a head gasket just so she can move around under her own power. That will be don't this weekend. Then the process really can start.

So some questions will be coming up in the next post to break things up.

So the questions.

I need to cut out floors rockers cab mounts and maybe more from this donor truck anyone have a link to a good write up on the cab mounts? I would like to get an idea of wat will be involved with the rust repair.

Would anyone like to school me on a 3 link? I've been reading up but been there done dat is always a good person to learn from.

Would anyone want to teach me Sae 2 transmissions? Also been looking but not totally sure wat I will need. I was thinking of a 7-10 speed with od. Manual of course.

And if anyone has any suggestions or input on this build chime in.

Now to keep everyone's attention for more than a minute some pictures.

Made it to md and back on 7 cylinders a while back towing this pos behind it

Crap paint and all

The psd that replaced it as the new beater

If the head gasket goes well and the weather hold out I'll grab some progress shots so far. Also some pics of the rust will be coming too.

Got up early while a buddy was doing brakes on the minivan. So I took some pics of the rust and showing how the body gaps don't line up.

Front shot body is not too bad but the spray paint is getting faded

Fender and door gap r a bit off

My rushed cab corner repair.

Drivers floor patch dat again was rushed.

Notice the lack of a rocker. When I got in there I had to work with wat I had.

Drivers cab mount rot is everywhere

Engine part way apart

Pass side engine bay

Already has hydroboost and a carrier pump

Got a good but done today.

The engine is shot and is not salvageable so it's getting another engine. I'm thinking dt466 or cummins but something odd like an 8.3. Not sure yet. But everything else is in good shape got the bed pulled too.

Did you know soot makes for great undercoating. Everything dat was covered in soot is pristine.

There is no through rust and barely any surface on the frame

If you look close you will see the object dat caused the head leak. It's up against the cylinder wall and melted into the piston. I may be selling off my performance parts for the Idi soon if anyone is interested.

what the hell happened to that thing to make it look like [I]that![I]

i'd forget about a 466 or an 8.3. while one turned up would make an amazing torque monster driving experience, a fast spooling 5.9 or dt360 will be virtually the same thing and you wont have to re-engineer the truck around the engine. you'll be doing a ton of work just to say you have a 466.

I was thinking a 360 because it's smaller but blocks r the same so if I find one for a decent price I'll grab it but the 466 is much more common and you can swap the 360 front end over to get the smaller size. So it will come down to wat works best for the price. The 360 will be a lot easier I fully agree it's finding one cheap.

I'm not really sure of anything you just tried to say, and I'm not trying to sound patronizing, but the 360 and the 466 are completely different animals in terms of size.

well I've read dat the 466 and 360 are the same block and the main difference is the front accessories. I'll have to look further into this as I have not yet taken any measurements on it.

well i'd like that to be true, cuz I'd have a 466 in everything I own.

466 is much bigger, much heavier, and requires much more work to get it to fit in a pickup truck or passenger vehicle.

5.9 swap is most common for a reason.

now you've read "dat" the 466 is not easy and you have to re-engineer the truck around the engine if you want to use it. pass it on.

ok well dt360 it is I'll need to search a little harder. You seem to have some experience wat are the best donor vehicles? I know a lot were in busses but have not seen them anywhere else. For the cost of engine and trans I can find an old dump truck dat has some rust issues and get it cheaper.

honestly i'd like to claim to be the swap master, and while I have more experience than most, I cant claim the title. the reason is; different areas have a different supply of donor candidates. A run of the mill 5.9 cummins is 1500 bucks regardless of what it was out of or where it might be. a dt360 is 1000-1500 depending on area, even less if there is no demand in your area.

so what can you find a donor for? basically your area dictates what youll find and for what price. dt360s are generally cheaper than 5.9 cummins because no one is looking for them, theyre "obsolete" so to speak. if your area lands in this category of demand-is-less-than-supply, then youll find a dt360 for 500-1000 bucks no problem. can also find a complete bus for what will turn out to be pennies on the dollar.

if youre in a position where a dt360 is going to cost you what a 5.9 cummins would, it makes the most sense logistically to go with the cummins.

I can see dat argument 466s are going about 2500 and cummins more It seems everything is around the same price though. One with the trans etc was 2500 and one as a long block also wanted 2500 odd. But the dt360 I've found 2 lately maybe I'll need to wait in the right deal to come by

I'd be interested in some parts. I'm just getting into the idi game. I have recently purchased an 86 F250 4x4 with the 6.9 from the original owner it's bone stock. I got another one identical but with a early banks turbo kit to use as a parts truck. I'm new to this group and I enjoy learning from everyone on here and I'd like to thank everyone for the knowledge shared.
