Update: Went and bought a "built" transmission yesterday with a dual disc torque converter yesterday. Has a extra 2 quarts trans pan, and it shifted pretty firm in the guys truck so we're going to see how it handles in the ole girl. It's going to be in there so that way the OEM trans can get sent off to BTS for a build/4x4 convert.
Also picked up that big hunk of steel! 2006 F-350 dually rear axle with some SERIOUS leaf springs. The pack is about 8" thick at the center so I can't wait to get that into the truck. Going to buy some leaf hangers from Rockauto.com for an '06 and use them. Unfortunately I'm going to have to wait until I have everything from the trans to the axle so that way it can all get swapped in a weekend (so I can hope) and then get measurements for a custom 1 piece rear driveshaft. It's going slow, but it is going!
Yes that is going to be a long driveshaft indeed bill. I didn't know if it would be "better" than the two piece. I've heard some have issues with having to shim the carrier bearing.
So I'm in the midst of dismantling my donor bronco down to scrap metal currently. Got to looking at the transmission from that next to my 2wd E4OD...
What's to stop me from unbolting the adapter (2nd picture) and swapping it in place of the tail shaft in the first picture?
So I have been doing some reading at it seems the only things I have to change to go from a 2wd to a 4x4 transmission is the output shaft and the tail shaft housing plus potentially some new spacer washers for clearances.
So if one was to buy a rebuild kit for the 7.3 e40d... I could buy the 4x4 output shaft and housing to convert it to a 4x4 transmission OR... could I use the output shaft and housing from one of my e40d's that were in my gassers? As I type this I want to say no because I am going to assume the diesel output shaft is larger than the gasser output shaft, but if anyone has input on the situation it would be much appreciated!
Well right now I'm at a crossroads... Buy a new exhaust for when I swap the transmission out (although I was told the down pipe will change when I upgrade turbos) or buy the front/rear leaf hangers needed to swap the 2006 dually axle under the rear of the truck.
Also considering removing and selling the saddle tank because with the rear tank mod, 56 gallons, it's pretty pricey to fill up and I hit the money limit every time.
