Whats the most HP some of you guys are running or have run in a DD and how would you build it? I know these motors are reliable and can handle alot of power when done right and have the right supporting mods. I was thinking of building up my motor for somewhere around 400-600 HP if not more depending on if the motor would remain reliable for DD and towing. What do you guys think?
There's a HUGE difference between a 400HP 7.3L and a 600HP 7.3L. Decide now what you want and prepare your wallet accordingly. I'm running 450 right now, and will be making the jump to 500ish shortly...
When it all comes down to it, it all depends on how much money you want to spend.
With the motor in my truck now, its at 508/933. The motor going in it in 2 weeks will be around 575hp or so.
As far as single turbo DD, with the right turbo and tuning, I would say about 600. But there are alot of different combos out there, a few that will work great, and alot that wont.
For compound turbos or compound procharger/turbo. i would say anywhere between 500-700 you could make a DD and still tow fine.
Those are max numbers though.
My suggestion would be either a 38r or a modded H2e and some 200cc/80% hybrids.
That should put you right in the 450-460hp range with supporting mods, be a great DD, tow great, be more than reliable, and plenty of power for the average person to have fun in.
thanks for the replies. i know there is a big difference in both price and reliability between a 400 and 600 hp motor. im looking to try and get mine as close to 500 or 550 if possible. the 400 and 600 hp marks were more of a general area that i want to be in, once i start to actually get my funds together ill start to narrow down that power range a little more so that i can figure out how much ill need. ziggy, what are you going to do with your motor that is in your truck now? keep it as a spare?
I make a good living but wow, the money that gets spent on these trucks is boggling to me... to each their own, but especially with fuel prices... what kind of mileage can you expect out of a 500 or 600HP motor?
I understand what you mean, especially with my new truck, $1500 and I'm at the same power level I was with my old truck, given I paid a lot more for the newer truck. The other thing to consider, working/playing on these trucks is a hobby for some of us. Just like those that have race cars, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles; we have our trucks, and can/do still use them everyday for work and play, not just on the weekends or vacations.
If you're wanting 500hp, can't just look at the engine, gotta consider the tranny, figured at least $3500+ for a new one.
Yea tranny is one of the first things (if not the first) i plan on doing once i start on this project along with getting some tunes from DP. Currently have a superchip programmer only because it came with the truck. Thinking i will need a new tranny in the near future because if i take the superchip off to run stock for a little while it gets hung up and slams into gear on occassion, runs fine in performance mode though. I was also curious about what kinda fuel mileage yall get out of yalls motors, wont change my mind but just good info to know.
I think 400 to 450 is a good DD power out of a 7.3 with out getting to unreliable. Big stage 2's and a 38R and your there and ride the trans out as long as you can lol.
did yall change out the headstuds/valve springs? thinking i would do that after i change turbos but before i put in injectors or at the same time as injectors since ill already be in the engine
sorry if im asking alot of questions, wanna make sure when i do this that i do it right. plan on keeping my truck for as long as possible!
Thats what this site is all about, most didnt know anything at first and now are pros lol, we all teach each other.
Rods are something your gonna want to check too, if you have PMR you may want to change them out for forged if your going much over 450HP, some people have luck with them some have none
Stock rating at the crank I think was 325HP and 575TQ??? In that general area.
Best mileage with the mods in my signature all hwy 15.9 to date
