Oh man...that's awful. I always hate hearing stuff like that. I know it can be safe, but I've never felt the need to walk or drive out onto the ice.
X2!!!!
....and at almost every funeral you'll hear things like - The ice was more than a foot thick and should have been strong enough. - There must have been a current that eroded the ice in that spot. Etc...
I'm a fair swimmer, but I would do very poorly under the ice without scuba gear. You can't pay me to go out on ice any more...
So riding 28 miles of lake trails would be out of the question?
Not necessarily, but I sure as heck wouldn't go alone. I've consciously avoided going out onto the ice my entire adult life, but much of that is because I don't know what I'm doing and haven't spent much time around those who do.
Nobody could convince me to do so now with the weather we've been having. I'm a chicken, and not afraid to admit that.
ON a totally separate note, if any of you guys do any charitable donations, I would highly recommend these folks:
They have a section here at Children's that has been really helpful to Karri and I for the times we've been here. Parents and families can go there to relax, a kitchen to prepare food, and they have sleep rooms for those who need them. We spent a lot of time here before they were here, but it's MUCH better now.
