Definitely an option Chris, I've been looking at those for the last few days. The GM vans have a bit of an edge though, as their extended models come with the same powertrain their HD pickups have, and they'll tow 9,000 lbs. We'll see, if we go that route I'll probably have to sell the truck.
Thanks Scott. Always fun poking people with the tag function.
Karri and I stopped at a handicap van dealer on the way home from the hospital yesterday. We spent almost an hour there asking questions, and we learned a lot. Man those things are expen$ive! A new lower-end minivan with a handicap conversion is about $50,000, and it's about $20,000 to have a minivan that we supply converted. If we need to go that route we're considering a full-size van. Those are cheaper to adapt, but much more cumbersome to operate. We'll have to see how things go, but if she gets a power chair a big change has to happen for us.
Explore Tri-Care. If you have Prime they may be able to contribute. Not sure though.

We have Prime, and through the ECHO program they will pay for some things. But they are limited to stuff that's not a permanent installation in the vehicle, which is quite limited. Her case manager suggested that they could pay for something like this:
Which wouldn't be a permanent solution, as we wouldn't want to have it exposed to the elements during bad weather. We're probably going to see about getting one regardless, as having a backup will be important.
On the way to the hospital this morning Karri and I stopped in to Roseville Midway Ford. Test drove a bus:
Extremely impressed with how well it drove. The 3.7L V6 moved that 6,300-lb van around really well, and the ride and handling were surprisingly good. 9,000 lb GVWR so it's got a lot of payload, and the right powertrain configuration can tow as much as 7,000 lbs. I thought Karri would hate it, but we both walked away really impressed.
We have 6 of those at work. Seats 15. Use them to transport my trainees back and forth.
Only issue we have is you cannot open the passenger door the rear door same time. If you do the plastic gray trim at the bottom will contact the passenger front door.
