She has use of them, but her strength has been seriously diminished over the last 6 months. This is largely blamed on fluid-filled cysts in her spinal cord called syrinxes, and this is one of the things that we were hoping would get better after each of her last few operations. So far any relief has been extremely temporary, and she's having a very difficult time moving herself over anything but flat, level ground.
When we first got back to Minnesota in September we took the family to the Mall of America. She must have gone for well over a mile in her chair and could easily keep up a walking pace the whole time. She hasn't been capable of doing that in months, and we're not certain if she's gonna get that back or not.
Spent the morning in Roseville with the wheelchair lady getting Hannah set up. She has a one-week trial on this one while they start paperwork to get her one. I'm having a rough day today...throughout everything she's gone through nothing has really gotten to me. Today it was like it punched me in the face, I've been a bit of a basket case most of the day. Not happy with how things have been going.
Tom - I really feel for you and your wife - and of course for Hannah... All the challenges you've been through and more keep coming at you. Many people would have cratered by now (I may be one of them) but you remain strong and take those challenges on like real troopers...
My hat's off to you all...
Some photos of Hannah's loaner toy, we have it for a week. This thing is neat! Apparently it weighs about 300 lbs, so it's quite cumbersome to move without a vehicle designed for it. Apparently it takes about two months to get the chair approved and delivered, so I have a bit of time to sort that part of it out.
With weight like that it is probably very stable! My Mom's power chair weighs pretty close to that... The last time I lifted it into the back of my sisters CRV, I got a hernia and threw my back out...
