Thanks for the heads up on that Mobil deal. My truck seems to love the stuff so I need to take advantage of that deal.
To Jim, I highly recommend the 5w-40 as well. My truck likes it so much better than 15w-40, especially in the colder weather. Plenty of people with UOA reports to back up the fact that they work too.
I ran synthetic year round in my 7.3 for almost 9 years with no issues at all.
The issue isn't synthetic vs conventional base stock, it's how thick the oil is when the engine is cold.
Older engines have higher clearance between wear surfaces, so they have more space to fill in with the oil to prevent metal/metal contact. Lighter cold temp oils (0w and 5w) flow better and are more likely to leak out of the bearing races than a thicker cold weight oil. Now they do lubricate better - there's no argument there. Whether or not they stay where they're needed is my concern. A thicker oil will not flow out as easily and will remain where it's needed until the oil reaches temp and thickens up. The issue with winter temps is that the pump can't suck it fast enough and you end up with a dry engine as the engine fires, and that's bad! We're already running 50% thinner cold weight oil with the 15w.
The warm viscosity number is the one to be concerned with for fuel economy. You would be more likely to see any improvement if you went down to a Xw-30 from the -40's. At least that's what all the oil manufacturer's data showed 5 years ago. Their mileage improvements were a whopping 1% dropping from 15w40 to 10w30. 5w30's higher cost proved to be a losing proposition when considered against fuel economy gains.
Do your thing with your trucks; I won't stop ya. I'll be running 15w40 until I get the analysis back from the stuff I'm about to empty out of it.
Ha ha...earlier today I almost texted someone about that. Was gonna ask if that finger was included with the car, or if it was extra. Silly idea if you ask me...you can't obstruct the plate from the hundreds of people who see you driving around in it every day.
It drives me nuts whenever I see that. Very few people are good at it, most end up blocking most of the car or end up with blurry pictures.
Speaking of pictures, why is it so hard for people to take good pictures off their vehicles? Oh, let's take a picture from inside the house, or let's only get half the vehicle in the picture.
