The only mod you need is to file the federally mandated anti-tampering nib off the choke housing, if your year had it.
(This is to keep you from adjusting the stock element)
Brnfree has pic's on the forum from when he rebuilt his "spare" 4180
If the $35 kit listed in post #2 will work with modification I'll do it. But I don't want to buy it, and destroy it trying...
Will it?
If you are concerned about fit, go to Holley's website, go to the bottom of the page and file a support question. They also offer the instructions download.
4180 & 4160 are basically the same carb, but the 4180 has 'tamperproof features'
Idle mixture screws are capped.
Metering plate instead of jets.
Breakaway screws on choke adjustment.
Fixed high idle stop.
Secondary stop screw under baseplate.
Vent pipes from float bowls tied to eec canister.
Etc..
The single wire Motorcraft choke heater swaps right over with the 12V Holley element.
I think I figured how to start the truck in cold weather finally. It's working ok if I start cranking the engine FIRST and tap the gas pedal to set the choke after the engine turns over a couple times, then it starts right up. I still have to figure out how to set the high idle somehow. I have to sit there and make sure it stays running for a minute or so with the pedal.
Thanks for all the replies. I am going to order the 45-225 Holley conversion kit and come warmer weather I'll tear into it unless things get better...
