converting to manual choke?

73 f100 custom 302 2brl (motorcraft 2100/2150)

Is it as simple as going and getting a choke cable from the junkyard and installing a new manual choke carberator? or even simpler just the choke mechanism from the passenger side of the carb and the choke cable?

thoughts?

Manual choke is pretty simple. I have two set up with manual choke (both carbs were already setup). Do you self a favor and go to the hardware and pick up a clean cable. They're only a couple of buck. You'll be working with a cable that you can cut to the proper length and that you know will work.

something along the lines of a throttle cable for a lawnmower, just longer?

Actually, I've used a choke cable from the hardware for a lawn more application. They're usually way longer than necessary and you cut them to length. All you have to do is get from your mounting point through the firewall to the carb.

I think you can get them pretty cheap at any autoparts store too.

Just got a manual choke kit at the local Advanced Auto near me, $11.75. Took about 45 minutes to install it.

Works just fine.

OK, I've got a question on this topic...and since it's still a relatively new post, I'll ask here:

I've got a Edelbrock 1405 carb with no choke--electric or manual. I need something this winter when it gets colder and don't want electric, which leaves me with a manual choke.

Can I get the cable and basic set up to attach the the choke plate on the carb....or do I need "extras" like the black cap, brackets, etc. like I see in the pic DanMan7's post from May 2008? Below is a pic.

I aske because I can get a simple Edlebrock cable that looks nice from a place like Summit, or get a kit from a place like AutoZone that seems to have the cap and other stuff. Maybe the cap is only if you are switching from electric to manual? Remember, I've got nothing right now. Maybe I get both the Edlebrock cable and the kit and merge parts together?

I believe the 1405 is a 600 cfm manual Choke carb. It should have the necessary attachment point for your choke cable unless someone has removed it. All you should need is the cable.

Mine has been manual choke with a 1405 carb for about 20 years- works great. All you should need is a cable. The 1405 is already setup for it.

Put the manual choke cable on (got the one from Edelbrock) and it is a 100% change for the better versus no choke at all. Got cold outside, started the truck up, pulled the choke and the engine smoothed out. This will be a nice change this year!

Amazon has many varieties to make the job go better. The metal ***** seem sturdier than the plastic *****. Avoid sharp bends in the cable. I put a choke & throttle cable combination on my Motorcraft 4350. It works better than the auto choke ever worked.

When you get the choke set up, you will be much happier with your truck - especially when the weather is cooler. When set correctly, they can run almost as good as a fuel-injected vehicle.

The next thing you would need to address is that air cleaner. The one you have looks great, but that's about it. The stock Ford thermostatic air cleaner is better in many ways. Read this:
