I have a 76 F150 4x4 300 six with a one barrel carb. The choke does not work and my mechanic said the best thing to do is install a manual one if needed, but he did not tell me how to do it. I live in the warm climate of Florida but still, when the engine is cold and has not been run for a few days/weeks, I have trouble getting it started. Once it is warmed, she runs great.
Problem is, I don't know where to buy part nor how to install. Seems like it should be very easy to do, but need your help pls.
any auto parts store will probably have a manual choke conversion kit, thay're not expensive and the instructions are on the packet. The kits will convert virtualy any auto choke to manual.
I've had three of those 300 Six's and all of them had the Auto choke, and they all worked.
You may have to take the carb off and do some cleaning with Berrymans, and replace the Hot air chimneys, but you'll like the engine performance a lot more if that Auto choke is working.
Those Cable chokes work too, but require some "Operator intervention" and most of us just aint used to that kind of interactivity with our trucks.
The theory is: You take the guts out of the Auto choke air horn, and replace the guts with the cable opreated stuff that comes in the kit. Simple!
Be sure you dont have any mechanical 'Choke Unloader' linkage to deal with.
The worst problem you'll encounter is running the choke cable through the Dash.
There is a nice rubber Grommet with two electrical cables running thrugh just below the Brake cylinder and a little toward the center of the Truck.
Oil the cable and poke it through the grommet alongside the Electrical stuff.
