I believe so. The PO bought it and I didn't see any stickers or tags on just the stick, only on the tube and the stick was in the tube.

It may be possible to get just the stick. Go test drive a V10

I think I may have found the source of the noise!

I was cleaning up the "next step" parts and was trying to figure out a way to flush out the torque when I noticed something. I grabbed the magnet and probed the converter and out came a chunk. Then I saw another, tipped the converter up on its side and when the fluid cleared I saw more debris.

Even though the first one came out with the magnet (might have been the fluid tension holding it) the chunks are aluminum. The chunks are about the size of half a pea and then squished like a hamburger. I found about 4 of them down the shaft hole of the converter plus some smaller debris I see in there.

So what would you guys do?

I would think if the trans was bad I would have been told that. So I assume right now that the trans still works and something in the converter was coming apart. But is the trans still ok now? Does the fluid leaving the converter go threw the filter before going anywhere else? Do I drop the pan on the trans, possibly remove the valve bodies and whatnot and flush out as much as I can or see if there is any debris in the pan, put it together, get a converter and hope for the best?

I was thinking possibly the bushing on the trans snout may have been worn and the converter was flopping around so I already have a pump gasket, o-ring, and seal on the way.

Can a used converter be trusted?

I would say those are Serious questions for Mark K and Krazee Matt. PM Mark for best response. Any pictures of chunks?

^^^I think that's great advice. Seeing how talented you are, I'd cut the converter open and see what else may hide in there. IIRC you mentioned the fluid is still pink, if so, you may be alright. I would replace the torque converter if it were mine. I've heard of the torque converters going bad in higher mileage 4R100 trucks. An old neighbor had a 7.3 truck and the converter rattled terribly (according to him). I heard the noise, just wasn't sure what it was at the time.

I am all willing to cut the converter open if I don't need it for a core.

I can get a pic probably tomorrow.

I'm curious about the aluminum, wasn't aware of any used in the torque converter but at a loss to explain how it would get there from the transmission. Have you pulled the oil pan off the transmission yet?

Awwwwww come on------I know you're going to tear it down. You could probably do it in your sleep....plus I've never seen it done before so a new overhaul trans and torque converter pictorial could be added to my "Things I wish I could do but it ain't gonna happen" list. I live vicariously through the labors of others

haha

The most I have ever done with an automatic trans is change a few springs and ***** around according to so instructions that came with a kit. Automatic transmissions are witchcraft to me, you spin a big drum in the front, something happens in the middle, and the output shaft turns.

I'll have to pull the pan and see what I can see. But I have some time off for camping now so you guys will have some time to debate this and what I should do. Hopefully you guys come up with a solution for me by the time I get back.

I am curious about the flow path of the fluid in the trans. Does the fluid go threw the converter first after the pump? Or does it go threw the trans first, then the converter? I would think centrifugal forces would keep any debris stuck in the converter (against the outer walls).

Maybe that "can of marbles" sound you read about some people having with their converters really is "marbles" rolling around in the converter? lol

Ok, if a guy were to search out a used trans (with a warranty) for this X what all years and motor'ed transmissions work?

Do the gas trucks/X's have the diode trasmissions? Any 00-03 4r100 work? What about the 2wd trans, can the tailshaft housing be swapped with the 4wd trans and work like they did in years past? V10 transmissions only or do the 5.4 transmissions work too?

Seeing how I can get a used trans "guarantied to work" for under $500 around me, the more I am thinking that is what I might want to do. The transmission comes witha torque converter too! lol

All I know is the Diesel transmissions do not work.

Probably a good time to go with the correct Viton seal though, being it will be out.

Edit: Found a thread worth checking out.

Good stuff there! So pretty much match the year and engine and 4x4.

I don't think the year matters as much though.

There is one within 100 miles, same year, same motor, and 4x4 for $490. That sounds pretty darn good to me!

I'd send a PM but your box is full. Thanks for the package and bonus. I hope the project is going as well as the thread is making it seem.

Thanks Bigzirb! Sorry it wasn't more, I've been stretched pretty thin with the X project and camping and all going on.

After over a week of fishing and having more time to think I believe once I find the funds I will just be getting the $490 trans and converter and just slap that in.

I have to pull the pan on the original trans and see if there is any metal in there just to get an idea of how much contamination got threw the system.

Camping was a great time. The 7.3 X ran flawlessly once again.
