Rather than air bags i installed SumoSprings. Sits level, rides great, and no air to mess with. Pushing 3000 lb with pin, hitch, and cargo. Also have a Reese 5th airborne pin box. Rides better than my 2011 dually did. Next upgrade will be Bilstein shocks.
you ever weigh it with a motorcycle on the rack? Curious what the axle is loaded at
I haven't weighed the trailer although I know very well that I should. The rig with the factory installed moto lift was built by Excel in 2014 with upgraded 8k Dexter axles, wheels/tires, and very robust spring hangers. The original springs are just now, after 3.5 years heavy use, showing signs of wear. I'm going to install some slightly higher capacity, American made springs in a couple weeks in preparation for our winter long trip.
My long term plans may involve installation of a well known independent suspension system for the trailer as I plan to keep it a long time. Getting away from the "covered wagon" suspension under most of our trailers appeals to me and I'd do the IS upgrade today if there were a way to have it done out west.
17.5 rims and tires or the g 16"? When we had one of our food trailers built I had them build it with independent air 10k axles. Best upgrade to the chassis I ever did! I can drive from one side of the state to the other and the microwave will never leave the counter. Saves on wear and tear on the rest of it too.
i just hate how these trailer builders are running these 40'+ trailers with a gvw a bit over 15k and running only 2, 7k axles and tires rated to 3520! Not much room for a guys stuff in that load rating in my opinion, especially if you have to carry a tank of water too

Yes, I made sure that it came with 17.5 rims and Goodyear G114 load range H tires.

GY614 aren't rated high enough for 8K axles, I'm using GY G114 tires on my trailer and they do hold up but the price is crazy at $435 each for the ones I just bought this summer.

I disagree. The G114 tires in my size tires are rated at 4,540.
Edit: Sorry, I may be confused about your comment. I see now that you may have been referring to the lower rated GY614's.
Srosa we are in the same boat because are trailers that are no longer in production so we have to take care of them. . A few years back I blew a 17.5 H tire (Not a GY) and I got some of the last parts available for my trailer to repair the damage and some I had to rebuild so I'm really **** when it comes to tires.
A lot of the members of our HitchHiker club have converted to IS suspension, I ordered ours with Mor/Ryde RE (not IS)but I've had to replace the rubber springs last year after 13 years, I also converted it to disk brakes.

Exactly. The phrase "they don't make them like this anymore" applies to RV's like no other. There is a much smaller mid level selection than there used to be just a few years ago. Acquisitions and bankruptcies have caused the already sorry state of RV build quality to drop significantly. My Excel is far from perfect but at least I know that if it's maintained, it should be dependable for many years.
I obsess over my tires too but know that a blowout could still happen. The affected parts for my trailer are no longer available but at least I've seen wheel skirts from other tandem trailers that would match up well once painted. Fingers crossed.
Excel in their wisdom made their trailers with 33" wheelbases. This really limits my selection of cushioned equalizers because the small ones are generally for 5-7k axles. Morryde does make a narrow equalizer that's rated up to 8k but it's nothing like your RE. I do use the Morryde cross members that I think come with your RE except they're bolted to my spring hangers. Besides Morryde IS, I'm also looking at an air suspension system for heavy fifth wheels. I don't know much about it yet (info on the way) but it appears to still use solid axles except it employs 4 air spring assemblies instead of leaf springs. The spring units attach to the chassis individually the same as Morryde IS "axles". Installation would happen in Oregon which is way more convenient for me than a trip across the country to Morryde
I converted my first Excel trailer to disk brakes too. Night and day difference right? I won't own another RV without them.

My RE isn't like the newer ones it's a large metal structure mounted solidly to the frame with the same rubber springs that the IE uses but my equilizers are mounted between two rubber springs. I still have normal springs that I have replaced once but it rides a lot smother than standard suspension.
