Wish I had got a picture of everything clean. This pic was taken right before I detailed the whole rig and then of course it rained on the way to Gatlinburg.
Just a friendly reminder to all those pulling their nice new 5th wheel with their nice new trucks, Visually check those jaws are wrapped around the king pin. and do a tug test. There's been a few reporting that they dropped their trailers and one with a total disconnect from the rig. Safe travels.
Excellent advice! Mine has a lock pin that I have to put in the pull handle. It will not go in unless the jaw is secure around the pin. Now, if I could just remember to drop the tailgate every time…..🤣
you should always hook up, check lights and then drop it in drive and hit the controller only. See if not only the trailer is secure to the truck but also checking the brakes.
It has always been a DOT requirement for those that drive commerically.

Yep, after who knows how many miles, and hooks, it is ingrained in me and I do it subconsciously now. The only thing that has not carried over from my CDL days is touching the plate with the pin, getting out and hooking everything up, locking the trailer brakes and backing under. With the trailer chocked up, hasn't been a necessity, but I really should do that to protect the jacks. Lock the brakes and do a tug test while still jacked so that if the jaws didn't latch, then the trailer doesn't fall into the bed and put a hole in it. My hitch has a red/yellow/green opening, when latched it turns green, any other color and don't move.

Reason why I highly recommend a B&W fifth wheel hitch.
That works too, but I’m to old to crawl in and out of the bed to unhook and hook the ball & chains every time! I’m going to a gooseball, best of both worlds.
