Fuel Filter

Hello guys sorry for the influx of questions, but im sprucing up the old girl.

I have a Racor 690R30 as my primary fuel filter/seperator that sits on the frame railand is before the OEM Filter and housing, it is 30 micron and 90gph.........Is it possible to just take the OEM filter element out and just use the Racor????.

Thanks in advance

I think you want more than 30 micron filtration,to protect your injectors

I should have took note,I know we filter our fuel for our Harvesters as low as 2 micron,John Deere filters we use are supposed to be around 6 micron.I will try searching, its Here I seen it.

Cool... so its safe to say that the OEM can not be removed............so these OEM filter delete kits (expensive) i assume are using the correct Micron filters.....where are they located? and what do you gain by them?????? Do they utilize a regulated return??? Looking hard at Riff Raffs regulated return for stock bowls, any one have any experiance with these.

You could change out OEM filter system,if you meet micron rating & water seperation that OEM is capable of.

Filters do not do well before a pump - it's the suction part of the fuel system. While they can work just fine if engineered for that purpose, and the rest of the fuel system is engineered to accommodate it - pre-pump filters can also sabotage your fuel pressure like it did in my situation. After my complete Hutch mod, I installed a pre-pump filter, then the fuel pressure gauge instructed me to swap to a pre-pump screen to protect the pump impellers. Water separation can take place in the screen housing, but water doesn't typically get in our fuel. If it does, it's a miniscule amount, as I discovered when I dropped my tank - there was no water to speak of in there after 13 years and 250,000 miles.

Now you have me thinking im gonna have to go and check for sure......so your saying its better to put the pre-filter on the pressure side not the suction????? Kind of defeats the purpose of having a pre pump filter. I noticed your still using yours are you happy with it there?

Most of the mods i have done where a long time ago.....i did do the fuel tank mod and a few others.....but by looks now things have changed a bunch since 02.......One mod i just did was a waste gate mod (mechanical) wow what a difference.........i have a wicked wheel (first gen) straight through exhaust boosted fuel pressure CAI and i would see just over 15psi boost pulling, ran it with the mod no load at WOT and got 22psi with a 6 speed.

Tugly and several of us are running the Racor PS 120 (picture in Tugs post) with it installed BEFORE the pump. Notice it is a screen type filter, not an element or screw on. It is made for pre pump. It basically just gets rid of the larger chunks and separates any water that may get in the fuel. You may have already understood this but I wanted to make sure.

I have had mine for a while now and do not have any problems or noticeable pressure loss. I like being able to see in the housing.

Nope i didn't but now i do...........i already ordered a Racor 9630, the old one is shot and a new one was more cost effective. So to make sure i understand with the 9630 i should plumb it to be after the pump pressure side?

I am not familiar with that filter. The best thing to do would be to monitor your fuel pressure with a gauge. I have determined that fuel pressure is probably the most important gauge to add. Tranny temp is close. Fuel pressure gauge helps diagnose many issues. Or rule them out anyway.
