I would get a full set. The rest are probably original judging by the dates. Service life is around 100k. Rebuilt set isnt bad, $200, not sure what new ones are. Try idiperformance, if hes booked out you might try local diesel shop. Biggest thing is to make sure they are pop pressure matched. Those shims on the spring dictate at what pressure the injector opens, its important that they are as close as possible.
So is it possible the truck has only 65k on it then? Odo says 65k, but have no clue if it's wrapped. But if service life is only 100k and your going by injector dates, maybe it's only got 65k. Sorry, getting me excited. That would be nice if it was, and I guess I'll never know. But a guy can dream. Lol. Only thing that stinks about having no service history.
A guy can hope right?? Lol. I think I'm going to put new injectors in. The ones that are in still have the International paint on them. It just seems like the right thing to do, especially after what I saw there in cylinder 1.
Since youre diggin in to it, i would do it, not a "must do" job precisely, but its one of those things id do all together. Its the general consensus that the IP should be changed as well, but that is more of a as problems arise / budget allows kinda deal imo. Ip and injectors are to be checked at 65k per ford and replaced at 100k. That said alot of guys will run em 150k, mine have 265k on em, but are horrible. No hot start issue, but doesnt start great, smokey idle, no power, pretty bad fuel economy.
9out of 10 people "looking for more power" that actually buy an IP and injectors say it made a completely different truck out of it, so odds are you will not be dissapointed
as already said, you can push 150k miles out of injectors and pumps. but they are pretty tired by then
the pump in my 88 has around 100k on it, the injectors are around 165k. i have one bad one, it will stop working if left idling for more than 10 minutes. then you need to rev it up over 1500 for a minute or so to get it to work again.
I'm going to leave the IP for now. It seemed to work fine, only issue I was having was the first start in the morning. And an occasional misfire at idle, which now I know where that was now. The parts ordering/waiting will continue it looks like.
It's been a great experience. Parts are cheap, everything is accessible, what's not to love? Most of this stuff is just maintenance items, but I think the truck ran decent before, so I can't wait to see the difference.
Talked to Jim at Rosewood, have 8 brand new injectors coming this way. I can't wait to see how well this thing is going to run when I'm done!
Well, its been a few days since I've updated my post.
Top of the motor is mostly back together, 8 new Delphi injectors have been installed.
Upon closer look, it has a reman IP in it, IFS was the brand I think? Couldn't read the label that well, kinda in a tough spot.
Next is the water pump. Haven't had alot of extra time to devote latley, between being under the weather a little bit and time constraint, plus $$$ constraint (I'm sure I'm not the only one with that problem) progress has been slow. But progress is still progress. Hoping to work on it some more later in the week, and have it back on the road soon.
Good luck, dont get burnt out. These things are so damn dependable they usually get neglected so bad that its amazing they ran to begin with. Once you get all the PO issues squared away i dont doubt you will enjoy it.
Well, she is up and running, got the water pump changed 2 days ago. Filled it with fleet charge. Still need to get a filter on it, there were floaties in my new coolant. lol
Primed the lines, and it started with little effort.
The difference is amazing. Its quieter, smoother, and starts much better.
I think the pump may have been turned up at some point, seems there is a lot of haze when you stomp down on it. I know being no turbo there will pry be some, but not sure how much is too much.
Hopefully this will be it for a while, got a nice little chunk invested, but looking forward to driving it.
