1978-1979 Crew Cab build thread
I still didn't have a donor truck.
What I wanted:
* something affordable
* 7.3 powerstroke
* automatic
* 4x4
Did you know that if you have a powerstroke, it apparently is worth it's weight in gold? Yea, I didn't know that either.
So I set my handy-dandy (not to be confused with Handy Andy) craigslist search app to 7.3 powerstroke.
Finally, a few months (or years at least it felt like), I found one that met my criteria.
In chicago. Of course, why not near me. Oh well...load up the hauler and grab it...
Enter 1996 turbo charged 7.3 powerstroke.
Ex-plow truck, so low ish miles (160,000). Also meant we were going to find lots of crusty bolts and crap to get this monster out.
Yea, lots of crusty bolts.
I have been told a '99 and up SD would be the better brake upgrade. I will hang onto this just in case...
based on what I have read, the 6.0 liter cooler would be better, but again, I will hang on to this just in case (is this how hoarders start life????).
I always seem to have a "spare" axle to drag around and get in the way of stuff.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
So we whipped out the sawzall, the big hammer, and some beer, and free'd the heart of the donor as fast as we humanly could...
hillbilly time!!! A frame to short, pull the tires...
It ain't pretty when you are running on fumes, but we will get this out...
Freedom!!!! But will it fit in Eleanor?
This...was...NOT...fun. See that little 1/4 inch lip between driveway and garage concrete. Might as well as been the grand f@!# canyon.
Wow!
I had to let the air out of the tires to make this clear. What a fun day...
Yea, so if I need to work at my bench, I guess that will have to wait...
But it fits and the township and my neighbors can be silenced for at least this part of the season...
Break out the Sawzall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wasn't pretty, but it was pretty efficient...
Yes I have a tow truck...yes it's a ford (PS to boot)...no I don't drive or "hook" for a living...no it's not for sale...
Off to the junk yard!!!
It was late, I was exhausted, thus I became fascinated...

Maybe I will keep these...

Or maybe I will sober up in the morning and realize that would be ugly AND stupid.
I'd have to move if I had neighbor and a township like that bothering me....I guess a township is like a HOA (home owners association)....glad I do not have one of them either to contend with.
Watching this build for sure. Just slap some plywood on the rear part of the truck frame, wala work bench. lol
Rules for becoming a true hoarder
1) Don't live anywhere you can't whip it out and mark your territory without causing some sort of community ruckus
2) Live somewhere where you can start your kids college fund with a scrape metal heap on the property and can't be seen by the wife ..
3) Justify it all by saying "they just don't make those anymore" or "that's for my metal sculpture I'm doing when I get older"
4) Keep everything as disorganized as possible so not to attract local tweekers looking for a fast buck ..
5) Keep your social circle limited to only those that can appreciate your genius
