How can I verify an F-250 is an FX4

Good morning, all.

I am brand new to this site so first and foremost I want to say thank you for allowing me to join.

I have never owned a Ford but really want to change that. I like the F-250 FX4 4WD and am looking at used. I'm somewhat baffled, however, by what I am finding. I locate an FX4, run the VIN and it always comes up as an XL. Do the FX4s have a particular VIN that is recognizable without having to constantly have the VINs run?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Take care, and have a great day.
Aaron

a Fx4 is really just rancho branded shocks and skid plates as standard.

But you can get skid plates ordered for any truck.

Thank you much, senix. If the VIN comes back as XL but it has the FX4 branding do I choose the FX4 trim if I am on KBB or NADA?

I really don't know the answer to that. But seems reasonable since the Fx4 is a package option.

I would check for the upgraded shocks, skid plate, and a rear limited slip differential. I would be suspect of an XL having the FX4 upgrade. It would be real easy to buy a decal and stick it on the truck. I just got a 75 GMC K15 from my cousin, with Z71 decals on the bed.
I wouldn't get too hung up on having the FX4 package- it's mostly a sales tactic. You can easily add Rancho shocks, or any other performance shock, and a skid plate. The limited slip differential helps a little, but in the end, the FX4 isn't a vast improvement off road or in the snow. Driving skill makes a much bigger difference than those stickers on the bed.

What year is the truck? On 2007 and earlier trucks, FX4 was a package that could be added to any trim level. On 2008 and newer trucks, FX4 is a trim level all on its own. If it's a 2007 or earlier truck, it's likely an XL with the FX4 package.

Just look under it.

If it says rancho shocks and skid plates under it, its a FX4.

Should note that shocks are NOT REAL rancho but made by ford and licensed so they can say RANCHO. Basically same shock as standard Ford.

If it has the FX4 package, that package might cost $500 or so new. It's a sticker, fake Rancho shocks and two skid plates. This shouldn't be a deal breaker for you if you found a nice XL truck.

I think that the F150's actually had an FX4 model for some years but the Super Dutys did not.

Not true!!! Having that sticker means you can never get stuck!

I think on the newer truck, you need 4x4, elocker or limited slip, then you could get stickers, ranchos, skid plates, and hill descent?

You could run the VIN number and see if the FX4 option is listed.

https://www.etis.ford.com/home.do

Enter the VIN on the VEHICLE tab.

My 2010 is an XL with the FX4 package (here in the photo). Near as I can tell the difference is the skid plate, Rancho shocks and rear sway bar.

It is actually quite common for the XL trucks to have package upgrades like that. My current XL and the one before that were both "off road" packages, which is the same thing as the fx4 but with a steering stabilizer and all terrain tires. But like everyone else said, mainly just a sticker.

for 2009's and later you can go to various web sites to get the windows sticker.

I got mine last year for my 08. My 08 is an XL, but the window sitcker shows the FX4 package, which as others have explained, is the skid plates, rancho medium grade shocks, fancy sticker, etc.
