Hey guys. I'm thinking about buying a DP 16 position chip. But I don't wanna pay $25 a tune on top of the $200 for the chip. I can buy a blank chip for $200 and can get the tunes emailed to me for free. Does anyone here have a burner to burn the tunes that they would be willing to loan? We would be able to work something out.
The tunes from DP tuner (or any other tuner) are set up specific to your truck and the mods you have. They also need the PCM code so I'm sure that makes a difference in tuning as well. So even if some one were to loan you their tunes, they won't work as well as you would expect, if at all.
There are a few factors that will inhibit your progress with this:
The newer (probably since about 2008-2009) F5 chips do not physically switch positions without being installed on the PCM (or without a dedicated flash device). The older ones were erasable/rewriteable on the bench with commonly-available stuff. This basically means that only DP-Tuner has the capability to do the F5.
Getting tunes emailed for free? Unless the supplier in question knows the correct binary size and addressing required, good luck getting it to work.
The big problem goes back to actually erasing/programming anything other than the first memory allocation on the F5 chip due to the safeguards placed in the firmware.

The only programming you'd be able to get from them would be the encrypted ones for the F6 since I'm eerily positive that Jody won't just send some regular guy on the street corner some unencyrpted binary for an F5 (that nobody else can write to anyway).....we can't have every Tom, Dick, and Harry sharing the Colonel's secret recipe.
If you're talking about the F6, you don't need a special programming device for it anyway.

I read on dp website I can get a blank chip for 200 and they will email the tunes for free. Stock dp tunes. And if I don't need a special programmer how do I get the tunes onto the chip
DP doesn't give out tunes for free. You can get a F5 and have Jody burn tunes to it or get a F6 and install the tunes yourself with a laptop and USB cable. Either way you need to buy the tunes from DP.
Jody's stock-power tunes are free, if you buy the hardware.
This has a wink-and-a-nod aroma to it.
chrisbrady498 - go to DP Tuner's website and you'll find "Tech Articles" at the top of the page. Click there, and you can have all the DP info you can hope for. The software to program the F6 is free, and the USB cable is as common as dirt - they give those away with half the portable/rechargeable devices on the market.
To the rest of us, I say... he's been informed of what's possible. I don't think he's going to come right out and say (in public) what his full plans are... but I suspect he's looking for a forum that supports activities unfamiliar to us as a group.
With that... I'll add that trying to circumvent the copy protection measures taken by the tuning guys leads to more consternation. The tuning vendors feed their families with the income from their wares, and I respect that. This forum is full of decent people that support their families, while satiating the need for a beast in the driveway. We understand the desire to save a few bucks, but this is the very "wrongest" hobby to get into with that goal. Short-cutting on one thing leads to some form of disaster on another thing. I think they should have called the Powerstroke the "Powerkarma" - because it treats you the way you treat it.

I've been following this thread and have been trying to determine if it was that (the part quoted above) or if he's so new to the world that he's just fumbling, trying to learn the best way to obtain his goal, in the least expensive manner, while still paying Jody (or any tuner for that matter) proper compensation.

Yes. I had a ts tuner and it got fried. What I want to do is get any tuner really. If I can get a blank one and burn the free tunes, I'll do that. I'm looking for the cheapest way to get a chip back in my truck. Doesn't matter the brand to me. What are your guys suggestions?
Was the TS hardware used or something? If you paid for the hardware and the programming, why not just purchase a new TS chip and load up the tunes that were on the old one?
If not, then I'd go with Matt @ Gearhead Performance.

$25 I don't think you looked close they are $50 unless you want a high idle.
I've been on the fence for a DP purchase for months. I like the preloaded option it's a much better value but you still need to buy a high idle and decel if you want them.
One day I won't need to worry about money and this will all be fun!
