Every 3 or 4 months my e4od will start to shift really hard slamming into gears. I learned from someone on this forum to pull the negative off my battery, wait a minute, reconnect. It resets the computer controlled trans and afterwards all has been well. Works every time for me. Apparently the computer will get a strange signal or something, could be a faulty sensor somewhere, and go into this limp mode. Resetting the computer puts it all back to normal. Worth a try. I may look into the TPS being faulty after reading this thread.
it would be a very wise course of action to stop doing that and pull the codes then resolve the issue instead.thousands of dollars could depend on it.
Thanks for that sound advice...I do pull the codes each time and there are no codes that show up. I found it baffling. All I can think of is an intermittent faulty reading from a sensor going bad (perhaps the TPS), enough to throw the computer out of whack for a moment but not long enough for a code to register. OBD1 here.
Ok, so i got the truck back. They said a faulty VSS. Is this true? Does the E4OD perform according to that sensor as well? Let me know if my chain is getting pulled. But on the plus side. They didn't say that they needed to rebuild my transmission or replace it. That'll save major $$.
My speedometer doesn't work at all. so i went to replace it. Can't find where it is. My truck is 4x4, so is it on the differential? Another question, I found a vacuum line above a connector on the transfer case that was cut off. Where does this vacuum line go?
that right there was the most important piece of information given.
the E40D is just like you.blind towards the vehicles speed.it hasn't got a clue what gear it should be in.

So i need to say thanks for the advice. Getting the vss to work solved the transmission problem. Very smooth shifts up and down now.
Still having problems with the engine shaking. Changed the distributor cap and rotor, tested the plug wires and it still shakes. I'm still thinking its in the vacuum system. Gonna double check lines, egr and listen for leaks before i go replacing the harmonic balancer and timing gear/chain. My Chilton book gives generic diagrams so i'm still looking for some help on that.
So i finally found what was making my engine shake so much. I'm guessing previous owner didn't tighten the crank shaft bolt enough. The harmonic balancer was loose, sheared the key way and wobbled enough to to bust the sleeve that fits on to actual crank shaft. Had to purchase new HB and make my own half moon key way since no part store had one long enough to fit my truck. Ford had one but not long enough to fit into crank shaft timing gear. So with fixing the VSS and replacing HB and keyway, truck runs and shifts smooth. Now i'm looking to increase gas mileage. Any suggestions? I've did everything from changing Dist. cap and rotor, plugs and wires. Liquids and filters are new. New 2.5" straights back to a dual in dual out flowmaster 40 muffler. what else can i do to increase gas mileage?
Not much you can do for mileage other than be sure everything is working properly. Fuel injection (supposedly) does a better job than a carb system does.
