E4OD shifts hard

I have a 94 F250, 4WD, 5.8L, E40D that just started shifting hard. Took it to the trans shop in town they read the codes. Codes showed Torque Clutch(or something similar) also that the engine was running lean. Guy at the shop drove it and said that to him it shifted too soft in higher gears and that it was slipping.
I noticed a few days ago that the speedometer fluctuated going up a hill and about 3 days later it started jerking when it shifted at low speeds. I don't notice any difference or problems downshifting.
It has 180,000 miles on the vehicle, don't know if any work has ever been done on the trans because I bought it used. I had the fluid and filter changed about a month ago when I bought it.
Rebuild at this shop (small town) is about $850 including new torque converter and shift kit.

Comments or suggestions?

Cost doesn't sound too bad. Just make sure you get all the mods that went into that tranny in '95. Did it shift this way when you bought it?

Good Luck

If you can get an E4OD rebuilt with a decent guarantee for $850, go for it. 180,000 is way beyond the normal life for one of those trannys. I had exactly the same problem. When the torque converter lockup clutch wears out it starts to slip. That slippage is detected by the computer. The computer sets the internal pressures higher to try and make the clutch engage. Higher pressures cause shifts to be very hard.

No I didn't notice any problems until I had the vehicle about a month. What are the modifications and where can i find info on them so I can talk to the mechanic about them.

Could you just replace the torque converter clutch?

Update, haven't done anything to the trans. Hard shifts don't seem to be constant problem in fact have only noticed it a couple of times in the last month. It does seem to be slipping more now though. Still no problems with downshifts, no blinking OD light, no clunking noises or anything else dramatic.
