yep, tranny problems

Ok, so i just traded my mustang for a 94 f250 xl 4x4. And it needed a lot of work. Just about have taken care of all the issues, except for one. My trans is shifting really hard in all gears. and yes, i have made sure i am at the right level of fluid. It also will not shift til i let up off the gas. when i do give it gas, the engine does this shiver type thing. it is a e4od tranny i need to have it fixed. does anyone have any solutions to this problem? Don't want to have to replace the trans or have it rebuilt if i don't have to.

The E4OD is 100% computer controlled and what you describe is what it's programmed to do when there are sensor problems, so you need to pull the codes.

I had the same problem minus the "shiver" symptom but I have a diesel. Check out my post to see my solution. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ard-fixed.html

My truck was doing the shiver when I came to a stop.

It was the lock-up feature in the torque converter hanging up due to low pump pressure.

My transmission guy opened it up and found that someone had already been in there. There was a front pump rigged up from 2 different pumps, and a mixed bunch of used solenoid plungers. Replaced pump, solenoids, and plungers. Pressures came up to normal, and I'm driving it every day.

It never threw any codes on the computer.

The only other difference from yours is the harsh shifting. Mine felt mushy, which I knew was not normal. Fords shift fast, GM and Chebby shift like a slush pump.

Owned this truck less than a month before I had to do the transmission work on it.

so, i just took the truck down to have my transmission diagnosed. won't find anything out til tuesday. will update on that. in the mean time, this engine shake is bugging me. I've noticed that it shakes violently when i cold start it. after warming up a little the shake seems to die down. but it will still do the shiver thing when giving it gas in park or while in gear. it also shivers a little between each upward shift going down the road. keep in mind, i just changed the spark plugs and rechecked them after a couple days of having them in. the truck doesn't hesitate to start at all. I'm wondering if there is a vacuum problem. i'm needing a detailed picture of the engine department and vacuum diagram. i looked up a chilton book with their diagrams. I can tell where some of the lines go, but not so sure on some of the others. if anyone could help, it would greatly appreciated.

Should have just pulled the codes yourself. More than likely it was a throttle position sensor problem.

My engine shiver problems only happened when the engine was fully warmed up AFTER I replaced the thermostat, which brought the computer back to life. Until then, I never got the overdrive gear to engage.

I have pulled the codes a couple times now to fix other problems that i had. I cleared the codes after each fix. Did test runs. I am now to where i have no codes coming up and my cel doesn't come on. In all the times that i read codes, i never received any having to do with the tps or transmission related. that's why i finally decided to let the experts take a look. I'm anxious to see what they have to say.

Dont know about yours, but my '94 has a detailed drawing of the vacuum system of my engine under the hood. It's on the actual hood, not the radiator support.

Has somebody monkeyed with your vacuum system? I went through mine (on another truck) and found cracks galore on them. Bought a couple of lengths of vacuum line and replaced every one of them one at a time.

In this case, it just smoothed the idle out a bit.

I had the exact same hard shifting going on in my truck when I first got it. A new TPS solved it.

I looked all over for that diagram and couldn't find it. Don't know if the previous owner took it off or what. I not sure if he messed with the lines, but i found one broke that was running down the passenger side of the engine (red line) that wasn't going to anything and it was also capped off on the other end by the vacuum tree. I was wondering if any one could describe to me what lines they had and where they go so i can see if i missing any. i cant hear a leak anywhere.

Every 3 or 4 months my e4od will start to shift really hard slamming into gears. I learned from someone on this forum to pull the negative off my battery, wait a minute, reconnect. It resets the computer controlled trans and afterwards all has been well. Works every time for me. Apparently the computer will get a strange signal or something, could be a faulty sensor somewhere, and go into this limp mode. Resetting the computer puts it all back to normal. Worth a try. I may look into the TPS being faulty after reading this thread.

i will definitely be checking into that. I have heard that "limp mode" used a few time. Thanks for all the advice from everyone.
