E4OD Trans

I have a 94 E-150 w/130K on it. The transmission began acting funny recently. It will jump out of gear and back in when going down the highway. Usually between 3rd and OD. Its like it is losing pressure. These trannys work on pressure to shift. Iv'e had the tranny inspected at a tranny shop and looked fine. Oil not burnt. I had the fluid changed and still does it. I am wondering if it is electrical maybe the computer. I know the shift points are recorded in the computer. I have tried reseting the computer by taking off the neg cable for 20 minutes then rehooking them up and running the van down the road reseting the shift points. When the trannny is having the problem it I can sometimes stop shut off the ignition, let it set for a minute and go with no problems. Doesn't seem to matter whether warm or cold. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't get an answer here can anyone point me to a good tranny site for help?

Have you checked for codes?

My first thought is that its a bad Manual Lever Position sensor. Doesn't always set a code and can cause the problem you describe. An intermittant speed sensor or PSOM can do the exact same thing.

Is it worse after you have driven for more than 30 minutes or so? Does it get worse the longer you drive?

It usually starts in about 10 to 20 minutes. It can be intermittent. Example, Sunday I drove 140 miles. It started about 20 minutes out. I stopped and and restarted and never had the problem again on the trip there or back. Yesterday it happened alot on short trips around town. It also happened at lower speeds this time. Say 45 to 55 mpr. No rhyme or reason to it.

It realy seams like a pressure problem in the tranny. I know these trannys work via pressure but the e4od also incorperates electronics via computer. That is why I was aslo wondering if it is the eec. I ran codes today and gotr code 33. I believe there were more codes but was not ready the first time and missed them.

Code 33 is the EGR not opening.

I should note that all automatics work on hydraulic pressure. I would say pressure if the fluid showed evidence. If it was brown and/or had a bit of burnt smell, that's the first symptom of a loss of pressure. The clutches would slip before they turned loose and the slip would burn them a little every time and that would turn up in the fluid. Typically, a pressure problem doesn't cause a random neutral condition.

I still think it sounds more like a bad MLP due to the fact it takes time to warm up first. The other thing it could be is the intermediate roller clutch turning loose. That's not a pressure problem but instead a mechnical one way roller clutch that is failing.

Where is the manual lever position sensor, intermittant speed sensor and PSOM. Also, what is a PSOM?

The MLP is located on the driver's side of the transmission just above the pan rail about the mid point of the pan. Where the shift linkage passes through the case, it also passes right through the middle of the MLP. The MLP is basically a variable resistor (rheostat).

The Speed Sensor is located atop the differential housing. You will see the wire loom running from it.

The PSOM: Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module. It is mounted to the back of the instrument cluster in the dash. It takes the raw output from the speed sensor and (based on the programming for gear ratio and tire size) outputs to drive the speedometer and sends the processed speed signal to the PCM. The PSOM has a micro-controller on it that sometimes goes bad. The output then drops intermittantly after it heats up. Its not bad enough to effect the speedometer but it will tell the ECU that the speed drops to 0 for a fraction of a second and then back to normal. For that fraction of a second the PCM thinks the van stopped and trys to downshift the trans, then instantly back up to OD. This issue can destroy an otherwise good transmission in very short order.

any # of sensors and switches can cause this
there are many threads in the trans section on this
at this time you should check www.fordfuelinjection.com
there is much info on testing the sensors and grounds
which is another thing that can cause your problem
more than likely this is not a trans problem but an
electrical one

OK, today I am trying to change the MLPS. Came off no problem but has different connector. So while changing over the wires I messed them up. Can anyone tell me the wiring sequence. It has 6 wires, 2 in one row and 4 in the other. I know I have the wires in the right rows but what order. A diagram would be great.

Thank you everyone for the assistance. I put the new MLPS and seems to have solved the problem. If there is any change I will let you know.
