What is the part number/engineering number for the TFI module for a 90 Ford Ranger with 2.9l supercab automatic tranny? I am looking for the number that is on the unit itself. Also, what is the Motorcraft part number?
what I am looking for is the original part/engineering number that I can go to my pick-n-pull and look at the number on the module itself and say "Ok, that works" rather than grabbing modules at random. I am changing out box store modules every three to six months and think that a Ford module might work better and longer.
my problem is that Ford has narrowed and combined applications in their catalog. the aftermarket has also done that with their numbers. The different applications among different companies don't necessarily agree with each other. a module that works on my Ranger and a Taurus and Bronco II from one company might work with one but not the module from another company. I know from research on the Duraspark ignition modules is that at least one (red grommet) was a full 12v with NO resistance wire in the ignition system, others change dwell and curves. I don't want to put a module on that will fry my system, nor do I want to lose any power (what little there is)
don't know if this helps, but my TFI started going bad..I had an extra left in my garage from a 1990 5.0L truck engine, installed it and my 2.9L is running just fine.
I also have another TFI from an 86 5.0L HO engine in my drawer.. have not tested that one yet.
going to grab a couple more next time i'm at the bone yard.. they're cheap..and like the OP mentioned, the OEM ones seem to last longer than the cheap aftermarket ones.
make sure to coat the distributor side with some good heat sink grease/paste..I use the computer stuff from Fry's electronics.. works fine
Thing about TFI modules, the real truth. They are almost all interchangeable. There are only two basic types, differentiated by color, and they can be interchanged too.
The difference between a gray module and a black module is pin 3 start power verses icm power. A gray will run where a black was the original but will cause a cel to be set. I have run blacks where grays where original with no issues.
