My 40 panel frame VIN has star, serial number, star, 2 more digits and other star. I'm getting ready to start a process to get a title and kinda wonder how to communicate the VIN since there's a star within it.
I have never seen an original Ford serial number (note: technically NOT a VIN number) that has a star in the middle of it. Ford specifically used the stars to keep people from modifying the serial number. If the numbers between the first and second stars are a proper Ford serial number, use them.
I will get a picture. Please explain how the serial number is not the vehicle identification number?? It is the only number on this truck and hence the number by which it will be identified.
There was no such thing back then as a Vehicle Identification Number, they were called serial numbers. VINs were created in '54. Look at original literature and manuals of the time and it's called the serial number.
The star in the middle is most likely a mistake by the guy stamping the numbers. Each character was hand stamped, and mistakes did happen. The serial number at the time was not such a critical thing as it is now. The number between the stars would be your correct number.
FYI, the S/N for my 1940 1-1/2 ton panel delivery is *99T-######* (six numbers). Go to VanPeltSales.com and click on Serial Numbers in the menu header for more info.
Mine has the 6 digits, a star, 18 and another star.
Sorry doe calling it a VIN, my bad but it's kinda like correcting someone for calling an engine a motor isn't it?
It sounds like you got one of the factory oops models. Either that or someone did some serial number altering for whatever reason. The serial number was intended to be star, 18, dash, serial number, star.
If you legitimately have a V8 Ford with a serial number less than 1 million, then you have a 32, 33, or 34 Ford. If you post pictures of the vehicle we can help you figure out what you really have.
Hey, It looks like you were having some fun in the Black Hills yesterday!
You are on the right track about VIN number. The serial number of your panel truck is the number that goes on your new title in the VIN location. I would put a dash where the star is on your number. 699-234566 for example.
Imagine Ulysses S. Grant arriving at the Pearly Gates and he is asked "What is your social security number?" He would say, " Well I don't have that, but I do have a name, rank and a serial number." "OK, we will use your serial number."

Good idea, thanks. I thought for sure it was some easily explainable thing the other people had ran into, guess not.
