That's a nice looking truck to start with. I have a set of grill inserts that will make it look a lot nicer, sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Think they are aftermarket but if you got the shipping covered, they are yours.

The chirping is my drive side mirror bouncing in and out of the door. The noise I am hearing is more like a whirring. When I start pushing the clutch in it changes. Maybe it's normal? I will take that a part this weekend and get back to you. I would also like to look at the linkages because I think my shifter is a little sloppy.

Hey thanks! I'd love to see a photo of them, and my zip is 80487. Very interested.

They are not perfect and they are Chinese, But some cleaning and touch up paint, they will look good. Nothing is broken on them. Let me know if interested.

Okay pretty sure I have a box theyfit in. PM your address and whats reasonable for shipping for you. I would rather see them on a truck than hanging on my wall collecting dust.

Pm sent. Let me know if you didn't get it! Thanks again!

Here is the video again so people don't have to look for it. So I am troubleshooting the whirring/whining of the clutch that you can hear change wen I depress the clutch pedal. It does it in all gears and is loudest with the clutch out. I am going to take the shifter apart this weekend as suggested in an earlier post to look at the bearings. Any other things to check....

As was already posted, I would put my money on clutch throw-out (release) bearing or transmission input shaft bearing and/or pilot bearing going bad.

If the noise does not change much when shifted into 4th gear then it is probably the throw-out bearing.

In 4th gear the input shaft is locked to the output shaft which usually takes the load of the input bearing and causes it to quiet down significantly if it is the source of the noise.

Divorced transfer case makes pulling transmission a little easier. Plan on replacing clutch disc and pressure plate while you are in there. If transmission bearings are suspect at all, change them out while you have it apart.

Welcome to the world of old Ford trucks. At least they are simple to work on and parts are readily available at reasonable cost compared to late model trucks.

Thanks for the input! it does not change in fourth gear, so I suspect you are right. I am amazed at how small and simple these transmissions are. Planning to take it apart maybe in June.

Would this be a good kit?

Can you tell if it has the bearings I need?

What would you recommend for clutches?

Thanks,
I am blessed to call that my driveway, looking over the land that the ranch I work for owns!

The throwout bearing isnt in the transmission, its part of the clutch. It goes on the fork that goes into the bellhousing. While the transmission is out, have your flywheel surfaced and throw a new clutch kit in it and be down with it. THese 4 speeds are easy, strong and reliable. If you have a friend that transmission can be out in about an hour if you have a good plan.

LEt me know when those inserts get there.

Pretty much any brand name replacement clutch assembly will be fine. Just don't buy the cheapest one.... Depending on the kit, it may include a throw-out bearing or you may have to buy that separately.

That transmission rebuild kit shown in your post looks pretty decent. Its usually a lot cheaper to buy the complete kit as opposed to purchasing individual parts. These transmissions are pretty straight forward to rebuild and I am sure there are plenty of how-to guides on the net.

Take lots of photos during dis-assembly if you are not familiar with these transmissions as that will make life much easier when putting it back together.

Your truck looks pretty good (although I admittedly tend to be a bit biased towards highboys )

I have always used LUK clutches, never had any issues. When I changed the factory clutch in my 97 f150 it had a LUK in it from ford.
