On my 93 f150 i was driving around and all of the sudden a whining noise became louder and louder, it sounds like it has a turbo. It sounds like its coming from the belt so i put a new belt and tensioner on and it still whined. So last night i put a new alternater in and still whines. Any ideas what else it could be ac, water pump?.... It hasnt hurt any performance but it is hesitant and slow to get started now?
Does it do it all the time, whenever the engine is running?
Only in gear?
Only while moving?
One quick way to check your accessories is pull the belt off and start the engine (obviously your water pump won't work now so don't let it run too long). If the noise is gone, then shut it down and start spinning each pulley by hand... you should be able to feel which one is getting rough, and you might even hear it make noise.
I have a similar problem, I have changed the belt twice and it seemed to be okay for a few weeks. But now it does it whenever the truck is cold, and it takes about 30min of driving before it starts to gets quiet
Check the pump reservoir, you're probably lacking ATF (if you aren't using ATF but PS fluid, replace it all with ATF, it helps). Get under the truck and check for leaks of PD fluid coming from under the steering box, the sector shaft seal could be on it's way out.
Well after replacing the alternator, power sterring pump, water pump, thermostat, heater core, new hoses, new belt, and new tensioner it still whines. It whines from 1800 rpm to 3000 and is really loud on down shifts and decelerations... Maybe the smog pump?? What else?
Like I said, take the belt off and check each pulley individually. Wrap a piece of cord or something around it and spin by hand if you have to. You should be able to tell which bearings feel rough.
And yeah if you still have the factory smog pump, I'd say it's likely that. They're all getting up there in mileage now... most folks just ditch them. There's a few articles around here on how to do that...
I'm having this exact problem. Goes away after warming up. I changed the belt and the idler pulley twice and it won't go away. I'm going to change out the belt after this snow storm with a gates or Goodyear.
