Screeching noise
Our 76 F250 with monster 460 developed a loud screeching noise over the winter. Its very loud on cold start up but quietens down as the engine warms. At warm idle there is no noise but with any throttle, the noise is back. Also, when you steer from center, the noise comes back, even at idle. I assumed that it was the power steering pump and so replaced the pump with a used part ("guaranteed to be a good part or money back"). The noise is still there, perhaps not quite as loud, but now there is a whining sound as well! I now notice that the belt seems to be too narrow and sits low in the pulley. Tried the old 'soap on the belt' trick, but the noise is still there. Heard once that fan belts can get a 'glaze' on them and the best remedy is to sand the belt and pulley a bit to get the 'glaze' off or buy a new belt. BTW, there is a slow leak from the steering box input shaft, so she needs regular topping up. The system was pretty dry when I bought the truck last summer.

OK, I'll check the alternator belt - but this is a separate belt from the powersteering/water pump/crank belt. Will take a week to get back to the truck before I can 'report'. Thanks for the idea.

Screeching sound
Finally got back to the truck. The alternator belt was fine but noticed that the power steering belt was really skinny and sat very deep in the pulley. Brought a correct belt (thicker) and once installed, all is quiet again - no more disapproving looks from neighbours! The problem was a too narrow belt.
