I am new to this forum. I usually post in the forum for vans as I have a e350 heavy duty. I just purchased a 32k 4.6L crown vic. It is noisy at start up but quiets down after a couple minutes. The noise appears to come from the belt tensioner. My question is if I can squirt penetrating oil in it like I did on my old Ford pickup or do I need to replace it? Sorry if this question has been asked a thousand times before.
You might try removing the belt and starting it cold. This will verify it is a belt driven accessory. The turn things by hand to verify what is rough or noisy. If it is the tensioner pulley, they they are not too expensive and I would just replace it.
I finally got around to working on this vehicle. I took the belt off and all was dead quiet. When I put it back on the noise resumed. I have a homemade mechanics' stethescope and started trying to figure out where the noise was coming from. It seemed like it was coming from the tensioner pulley so I replaced that-still makes the noise. I then replaced the idler pulley-you guessed it still makes the noise. The noise stops after about 5 mins so I guess I'll just have to wait for either the water pump or power steering pump or alternator (pretty sure this ain't it) to fail. Total cost so far $36 which isn't to bad. Thanks for advice.
Update on noisy when cold. I took the vehicle back to where I bought it. They replaced the same tensioner-pulley that I had. The vehicle is dead quiet. Go figure.
