I'm trying to help a buddy out but I'm having a hard time with it. He has a 94 IDI with the factory installed turbo set up. It has a major exhaust leak. The little tiny y pipe that goes up into the turbo is where it's leaking. There's no gasket there at all and the Ford dealership says it just slides up in there and it's supposed to seal, which I don't think that's right. There has to be some sort of gasket or something. And obviously my dealership isn't worth a damn, and none of the parts stores even understand what I'm talking about.
This is the little y pipe I'm talking about. The part that's at the top of the picture is where it goes up to the turbo, and that's where it's leaking at. Does anybody know where I can get this gasket or how I can fix this? Also, I was told this was a Banks system, is that correct?
If I'm looking at it right that's the bottom part of the two piece up pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold/cross over pipe up to the hot side of the turbo. The dealership is correct, unless I'm badly mistaken there is no gasket where the two pieces of the up pipe connect. I've read a lot of threads about guys having problems getting a good seal at that connection. That's why when I installed a 093 turbo in my '93, I didn't separate that up pipe when I installed it. I don't really have any advice on how to get it to seal other than from what I've read, once it gets a good soot build up around that connection it should seal.
Yea its supposed to seal with soot, but like mine, its wore enough that soot wont fill it. Best advice i have, weld it, but you most likely have to pull the engine to install it.
i went threw a heck of a time trying to get mine to seal up good. eventually got to the point that i said screw it, and got new pipes from Russ(typefour). Really is the way to go. the new pipes fit together so nice and tight and seal up great. I now have ZERO leak at that connection.
