No gaskets for the manifold flanges or ball sockets on turbo castings. Is that an ATS or factory Ford turbo? I've been hearing this problem more and more on here. Not sure what is the best fix.

There should be a flat metal gasket where the turbo bolts to the upper casting pipe, but other than that, nothing but metal to metal seal.

Which side has the most wear? The ball socket or the hole it goes into?

the part that meets the turbo, where both cast iron parts join on the passenger side. is the only leak

Spray the metal gasket with copper high heat spray gasket maker. Also spray the bottom of the turbo and the top of the up pipe. Let the gasket maker dry completly before you assemble it.
Also when you have it apart, wire brush the studs and use never sieze on the threads when you assemble it so you get good clamping from the studs.

With the boost I am running I just had to do all mine last weekend.

I also found catyalytic converter gaskets I put between the ball and socket connections that ATS and Ford used on the exhaust at the manifolds. Coated them with the copper gasket maker as well to stop the high pressure leaks.

I will walk up to the garage and look if the rain slacked down some. Be back in a few minutes.

Permatex Copper Gasketmaker Spray

Formulated for turbo flanges, rated for over 500 degrees, I have had mine over 1000 degrees this week with no problems yet.

That part about the turbo flanges is in the small print on the back of the can.

wondering if the person who installed the turbo did not replace the factory studs that hold the up pipe to the passenger manifold. The nuts on the original studs will not let the y connector come up tight to the manifold.

Get grade 8 instead.

Dave, what is this converter gasket you're talking about? Was your ball socket loose?

I went out to NAPA and went thru there exhaust gaskets till I found one that the bolt holes almost lined up and the exhaust hole was the correct size. Have no idea what it fit, the description that came up on the reciept was catalytic converter flange gasket.

The bolt holes in the gasket were 1/4" to close together, but a little work on the drill press fixed that.

My ball socket was not loose, but it did leak a little at idle. At high boost I am sure it was leaking more since I had some soot stains on my nice red motor.

I also found some stains above the exhaust manifold on cylinder 7 so I did the exhaust manifold gaskets while I was in there.

Replaced all the bolts with grade 8, never siezed everything and increased the torque to 45 foot pounds in both the intake and exhaust manifolds. No more leaks when the boost goes over 20 PSI.

My real problem was the intake/valley pan gasket was letting boost into the cooling system at cylinder 5 intake port. Not enough gasket material there to stop 20+ PSI of boost. So far the copper gasket maker and the increased bolt torque is doing the job nicely though.

I guess it will take me a couple months to see if it stands up in the long run though. The stock gasket took 6 months to blow.

While I was in that far, I pulled the heads. The head gaskets were perfect with no signs of leaking or seeping, so the head studs are doing their job nicely.

I had done some testing running propane on it a couple weeks ago and thought I toasted a head gasket when the compression was showing up in the cooling system. But if I kept the boost under 12 PSI I never had boost show up in the cooling system. So I was thinking it was in the intake even before I tore it down.

I had the propane set to kick in at 8 pounds of boost, all I can say is you better hang on. Boost shoots up a couple pounds, black smoke is all gone and we are outta here. Whew boy.

I also found I had a couple bad injectors, so I called DPS this week and Ken is building me a matched set of Stage 1's. Can't wait till they get here.
