I don't know what to say about these photos other than if I have to keep the vehicle, the duct tape and felt will have to go! I think Fletch works in my service department. This is the view from behind the glovebox:
This is the part sticking out under the glove box (and visible from passenger area)
I will give them credit for trying, but have to wonder if they really thought someone would want this in their $37k vehicle. McGyver Lives!!
I got a call from my dealer the other day, he said that now Ford is aware of the a/c problem. The evaporator coil is freezing up and the engineers are working on a fix for the problem, they should have some fixes by Oct 2003. I told him fine but summer would be over then. Well at least they are now saying that there is a problem and not sticking their heads in the sand.
That sounds like the exact problem that I am having. AC works good until you run it on low fan for several hours and then cut's out both the cold and air pressure until you let it "thaw".
My husband finally lost it after another trip to the dealer with the a/c alternatingly blowing 82 degree air and was told that this is the way the a/c works. He took a digital readings in the truck with a digital thermometer. He has contacted Ford Directly and they are to get back to us within 3 days. They (Ford) says they are not aware of this problem so here is the number that we called maybe if enough people call them directly bypassing the dealers then they will get a loud and clear picture that "HEY THERE IS A PROBLEM"
800-392-3673 you will need a few things for them. VIN Number, Date of Purchase, Year, Model, The Dealer that you purchased the car from.
Will let you know the outcome as soon as possible.
ddemnons:
I called the number and the rep said the best thing for me to do was to touch base with the service mgr., as they are going to send him a request to have the expansion valve replaced. Supposedly, it is on back order, so when they get one, maybe I will be able to put this to rest. Any progress on your end?
Unfortunately I cant make any promises on noise, because I havent had a single customer complain about that. Only poor cooling performance.
I know if you had a noise problem and had purchased it from my dealership, and it was an obviously different noise than the others made, we would do anything to resolve it, including replacing the whole plenum and evaporator assembly if thats what it took. We certainly wouldnt have stuffed a bunch of foam up there to resolve it.
Unfortunately I havent found this problem on any units we have serviced so I have no answer on its cause.

We'll see what happens. I hate to be pushy with people, but on this issue, it seems that is what it takes. I have a jeep gc too, and their service dept is the pits. If you don't diagnose the problem for them, you might as well not even take it in. The ford dept has been great on service for my F150. I have been patient, but it is wearing thin. The dealer refused to buy it back, but said I could go through the ford mediation process. I guess we will see what happens after they replace the expansion valve. I plan on driving a couple of more this weekend just to prove to myself and the mediation board (if needed) that it is not a figment of my imagination.
I have been on vacation, just got back. Ford as called back they are to have the dealer we purchased the car from call us, next week to set up an appointment with the Service Mgr @ the dealer & the Regional Rep. They can not do anything until we do the Regional thing. But at least it looks like it might have gotten someone attention. We were in Myrtle Beach, SC all week & the cooling sucked, had a guy that works at the local Fitzgerald Dealership in the group. He said it acts like it might be low on freon again & there is definetly something else wrong. Keep you posted.
Any Updates on the A/C Issues ? My dealer is still telling me Ford is working on a fix and they will let me know when it happens
I sure wish I still had my 98
Please keep us posted since ours has one of the same issues....Our 03 EB we picked up 8 weeks ago has been in service for 3 straight weeks now not counting the whole 2nd week it was in for repair. I've almost forgotten what it looks like. Have a meeting with the Regional Ford Rep tonight and a second with Regional Engineer on Friday. List of issues:
1. Grinding noise when turning the wheels and accelerating. Dealer hasn't isolated it but is replacing the rear axle this week.
2. Air Conditioning hiss noise that is louder the faster the truck is moving. Service verified that it is unusually loud but is unable to fix per Ford.
3. Wheel shake at 70 mph. Balanced tires 3 times, still not fixed. Service says that new rear axle will probably solve (sure).
4. Passenger side mirror. Jams up on itself every time it's put in reverse. Sometimes it doesn't even go back to original setting. Module replaced twice, whole mirror replaced once, still broken. Service claims Ford is aware of issue and they currently don't have a fix because the actual computer program has design flaws. Unable to fix.
5. Supercharger type loud whine when pressing gas pedal. Service dept replaced the driveshaft but didn't work. Service now is unable to figure out but thinks it might go away with new rear axle or when they actually put the front axle back together.
I'm glad I bought a 'top of the line' EB and I'm driving a rental....
