^^^ This..when I discovered that Lucas was my issue I got it out. Its easy for us to spend your money but that's what I did. I went with Rotella T6 5 w40. Its a full synthetic and my truck runs much better on it.
I think I'm going to change it out today. Do I like spending another $100 on an oil change when I just finished doing one......No, but I'm not liking what "could" happen to my engine.
If I go with the synthetic oil, I guess my oil change interval could be extended past the 5K mile interval I have always followed. I know that there are many thoughts on this topic, but is the general consensus 7500 miles to justify the extra cost?
Well....I just finished changing the oil to T6 and changed the filter. We'll see if it improves the cold start issue. I feel better already just to get the Lucas out of my system.
UPDATE.....Although it wasn't that cold this morning, 57 degrees, after starting she fired right up and there was no stumbling. The oil change seems to have fixed my starting issues.
Now the question, was it the synthetic oil that cured the problem or was it merely changing the oil and getting the Lucas out of my system. Only thing I am sure of is that I'm not going to change the oil again to find out.
Sunday morning the lows are going to be in the mid 20's. I'll have a better idea then. As for now, I'm happy.
I'm reasonably sure they both played a part. Getting the Lucas out alone may have helped with the romps, but the synthetic will make sure everything works all the way down the thermometer. I've always run synthetic and I've started in sub-zero weather (unplugged) with zero issues. I experienced the romps just one time when I accidentally short-cycled the glow plugs - it was a newbie mistake.
I use T6 year round and change at 10,000 miles. Blackstone reports say I could go 12,000 except when I've been towing my 5th wheel for 6 or 7 thousand of those miles. They recommend 8500 then. I routinely go out at 20,000 lbs truck and trailer.

You didn't get it all out. There is about 2-3 quarts in the hpop resevoir and the rails that don't get removed during a normal drain. Probably won't matter with the synthetic but I would change it out in 4-5k.
