Very Cold Start

Well I am very impressed with how my truck started on Sunday morning while I was away up in New York. I parked the truck at a hotel around 3pm on Saturday, not to return to start until 6am sunday morning. My scan gauge read the temp as -2 degrees F and the thermometer at the hotel said -10. Unfortunatly they had no place to plug in my truck in there parking lot so I just had to hope it would start.....and it did. Just one cycle of the key and it started right up. The engine was loud, but it did not sputter. It did smoke alot once the high idle kicked in. I do have a video it was dark so basically its just sound if anyone wants to hear it.

Out of curosity what is the coldest these trucks can start without being plugged in?

I've done well below zero.

I did -17F back in the beginning of January.

Wow, I guess I dont have too much to worry about. I know with our old 7.3 it is very difficult to start when it is cold. If it is not plugged in it takes a few times attempts to get it to start, then it smokes like a freight train. That is why i was impressed with it starting.

When you started it that cold did it smoke alot? My 6.0 gave out a puff of black smoke then a whole lot of blue/gray smoke.

No, just the normal condensation smoke at those temps. Can't say I pay that much attention immediately after starting... I start it and run back inside.

Most 7.3's I have been around need to be plugged in around 30-40 degrees. Cold blooded beasts for sure.
