I find that if I start when it cool out 45~35F the truck starts a bit
harder then warm. BUT get it below 30F and it starts great.
What gives???? I have seen this a few times.
Anyone else have this happen?
Doesnt seem too crazy.. a 10* diff shouldnt be that much different? How much longer do you crank? Is the cold start after an all night sit? Does it dump a buncha grey smoke?
It seems to be about 1/2 at the colder temp and the voltage of the battery
drops even less.
This is after an over night sit and chill it was about 25F last night. When it
is that cold it is almost like a gas start on how much faster it roars to life.
I do get the smoke and unburnt diesel smell that goes away as soon as I
reach about 75F EOT. When it's this cold I do let it warm up on high idle
to get it going and defrost the glass.
It just seemed odd. It starts well when it's warm/hot or very cold as in below 35~30F.
I saw this last time there was snow on the ground. So I guess my truck likes the cold.
???? Not bitching just asking if anyone else has seen this.
BTW I have Rotella T6
I see something similar. Cold start at 10 degrees and it fires right up. Drive all day, stop for 10 minutes or 1 hour and it fires right up. But, truck sits 8-9 hours at work and it seems to take a moment longer to fire.
I would like to know if there is some algorithm in the ECM/FICM
program that gives it a kick below X temp.
Maybe Cheezit or M-chan will stop in and
give some input on it.
That may be the answer there.. when its lukewarm, synthetic might be acting funky.. ive noticed the same thing with starting easily cold, and fine hot, but let it sit at work for 9 hours and it throws a little fit when I come out.

I've noticed it with dino 15W40, dino 10W30, syn-blend 10W30 and full syn 5W40.
My 6.0 was acting weird on starts back when it started to get cold and i read up on here and had my buddy plug in with his snapon scanner and we found the FICM was at 46.5v instead of the 48v. The truck would start fine some times and others not so well. Was very temper metal
My truck does exactly the same thing between 35-45 degrees. For whatever reason it just doesn't like that temp range. Brand new FICM, 8 injectors, IPR, ICP made absolutely no difference.
It kind of reminds me of the old carburetor days when the automatic choke would never work right within a temp range.
