A 9" should not have a rear cover . What did come out , oil , water oil mix ? Suck it out with a hand pump and refill . Would be nice to know how the extra ? got in there ...
The 9" doesn't have a cover. I always wondered you do any work to it.
RTo work on it , pull axels , pull " pumpkin " , chunk . With the chunk removed , you can repair it . Axels and bearings are held in with plates and bolts .
So, whats the proper procedure to change this? Is my option to remove rear cover, and drain....
Should I just get it sucked out and filled till it comes out of the fill plug hole?
A Ford 9" doesn't have a removable rear cover and with no drain plug it makes for a PITA to drain the rear .
Without pulling the axles and drive shaft so you can drop the center section, the only option is to suck the oil out. You can go to a shop and have them do it or you can get one of those hand operated suction pumps (looks kinda like a grease gun) or a small powered pump.
Ford didn't do anyone any favors when they quit putting drain plugs in these things.
I just had it done at Jiffy lube.
Much easier than doing it yourself.
Guess a MittyVac would get it done through the fill hole.
Most OEM 9 inchers had no drain.
But as we know with everything Ford there is always another way that it was done.
Check this out.
This is the 9 inch in my Fairlane.

That's what he meant. You have to pull the axles then unbolt the third member to do any gear work at all.
If you don't pull the axles it won't come out (at least without a big boom).
