Alright guys, Im changing out the rear gear oil and want to slap the ford engineer who designed this...am I wrong?
I pulled the drain plug and let it drain, Id bet about 2quarts came out...but when I went to fill it I know its started pouring out of the plug before I got more than 20 ounces in...
Is there any tips or tricks to doing this right?
Ive read people just going to jiffy lube and having them suck it clean and then pump refilling it? any thoughts on that?
My Fill plug is on the front side , no drain . If you pulled the fill plug , and that much ran out , it was over full . What color was the fluid , chocolate milkshake color ? May have been full of water . I have seen that before .
I was always told to fill it until it comes out the fill plug. Pull the cover off the back, drain it, replace the gasket (I always do this when the cover is off as a precaution) and fill it back up until it comes out the hole you "emptied it out of". I have no idea how much could have come out of that hole, or how it got in there. You'd have to fill it up sideways...

Agreed. The plug that is about half way up on the driver's side is the fill plug (the yellow circle, ignore the blue arrows).
If two quarts ran out of this port, that was way too much oil. The correct fill level is fill it until the oil dribbles out of the fill.
To actually drain it, you'll need to suck the oil out through the fill port.
You also need to investigate why it was that full to start.
As for being new to all of this, don't worry about it. We were all new at some point.

If the OP has a 9 " , there is no rear cover , or drain plug .

You're correct. The vast majority of F100-150's have the Ford 9", however, there are a few rare birds out there that came with a Dana 44 rear. In that case the rear has a removable rear cover rather than the drop out center section.
I believe what happened is what jcw said and you may have saw fluid come out of the fill plug.. there is no drain plug on a 9" unless someone has had one welded in.. you're best bet would be to go buy yourself a small hand pump to get the job done.. if the gear oil is still a nice brown then it should be good
Here is a 9"
Here is the fill plug.. you can see on this one a drain plug has been added but it has a completely custom housing also
