New oil drain plug recommendations?

Hey all. I have to change the oil drain plug in the pain of my 351m,long story short the guy who had it before me used a plug with a lead center thats designed to melt out when it gets to hot, real smart. Anyways i was wondering whats a good plug to get,ive seen the quick drain ones that are magnetic and such but i dont know how dependable these would be...any sugestions!? thanks so much in advance

i would use a regular drain plug they run 1.00 to 2.50. try ti get one with a magnetic tip. i usually toss them and replace them every 15k.

Just out of sheer curiosity, does anybody know how much an OEM oil drain plug costs at a Ford dealer?

I've never seen a lead center on a drain plug, and I don't think that the lead would melt at any reasonable engine temperature. Besides, why would anybody do that?

So, I have to ask, "Are you sure?" Could it be a magnetic plug like Ford390 is suggesting?

lead melts at 620.6 degrees an impossible temperature in your engine.

There are alloys that melt at lot lower temperatures. There are 2 pure metals and a handful of alloys that are liquid at the temperature of a boiling water.

Of course, why would anyone make such a drain plug?!? Even a hot oil is better than no oil....

i don't think anything melted, my guess is it is a magnetic drain plug with a lot of metal on it.

Speaking of magnetic drain plugs, my mother in law's 2002 Tahoe has one. The last time I changed the oil in the Tahoe for her, the magnet on the drain plug had several long (3/8" lg. approx.) slivers of metal on it.

How can stuff like that float around in an engine & not destroy it?

Stuff like that can't float very long because either the filter, or a nagnetic plug will catch it, at least in the engine.

I should've made a picture when I took the plug out of my rear diff that started the self-destruct process -- the plug had a 3" - 4" long 'tail' attached to it!!

How about a Fumoto valve. Many here along with myself have had very good luck with this product. They have a nipple version that is very convenient for us truck folks.

I bought one yesterday for a 5.0 (302) from the dealer for less than $4.00.

I also agree with using the Fumoto ball valve. I've used them for years without any problems. Summit Racing sells them.

Thumbs up

Theres a guy on ebay that sells magnetic plugs, strongest magnets Ive ever seen , also sells the magnets seperate if you want to drill your own 1/4 " hole,$3 ea for the magnets $6/12 for the plugs, also check out www.filtermag.com, huge magnet that goes on the side of your filter , you will be surprised at the metal particles 10 micron or smaller that your filter misses ! , Craig.
