Lately I've noticed a shudder when I try to accelerate in reverse. Other then that the trans has been shifting and operating fine. If I put in in reverse and let it idle or give it a little it will back up fine, but if it's a decent hill, or I have a trailer I end up feathering the throttle to keep it from slipping. I would describe the "slipping feeling" as a feeling of pump cavitation on a hydraulic drive.
I change the fluid and filter every 25k since I got it, but the trans filter is black every time I change it out even though the fluid always looks good. I'm 4k away from crossing the 250k mark on the truck. So is it time for a rebuild or does it just sound like a solenoid acting up or something else minor?
With 250k on it the first things that I'd check would be the center carrier bearing and U-joints. If they're original my money would go there first. Also a lot cheaper.
This symptom is known as reverse chatter, feels like you didn't get it all the way into Reverse.
The solution is to replace 1 of the solenoids in the transmission with a GoGO Diesel or Stock ECP Sol as this controls the 3-5 shift and Rev.
It's easy to do I did mine in 30 minutes.... But may not solve your problem if it's been doing for long -you'll need to replace the clutches associated with the Rev gears.
Procedure...
Drop Pan remove fake filter housing and o-ring if it hangs up in the tube.
a few screws to hold the harness
remove the circlip off Sol #3 or 6 can't remember
there are 2 rows 4 in 1 and 3 in the other.
slide out sol.
slide in new sol - only goes in 1 way
replace circlip
replace screws
Now....
While your in there...
You should've ordered the 08 pan and true filter from the online parts guru
Hasn't been doing it long, I just noticed it this weekend. I had to feather the throttle in reverse backing up my boat on flat ground and backing the truck unloaded up my driveway. I'll look into the Direct Solenoid based off those posts. If nothing else it might by me some time on the current trans. Thanks for the help.
Well, I got the HD version of the solenoid in there yesterday after work... still have the slipping in reverse. I barely go the truck backed up the driveway after the test drive. So I'm assuming my clutches are toast and I need a rebuild if it won't hold with 4x the previous holding power...
Luckily I found a Ford mechanic in the area that rebuilds torqshifts on the side who has a rebuilt unit with a new torque converter for a good price, so I'm going to pick it up this weekend and try and find an open weekend to switch them out.
Well, picked up the reman trans last weekend along with a torque converter. Planning on doing the swap this weekend. I'm also going to transfer the HD Direct solenoid I just installed into the current trans and add an HD EPC Solenoid to the "new" one.
Reman trans with upgraded solenoids is in. Preliminary test drive went well. Found out why my trans has had an annoying leak I couldn't track down for at least the last 50k also, but I'll keep you all in suspense till I have more time to post pictures... I'm still covered in atf and dirt and need some sleep.
Although I have ZERO knowledge of things automatic transmission related, what I do know is, it seems that these particular transmissions were prone to have the reverse clutch drum snap ring "walk" out of the case groove to cause the damage as seen in the photo above, only in model years between late 2004 and early 2005. Ditto for the odd TFT sensor failure, again only on 2004 and 2005 model years. Aside from that, they have been almost completely trouble free.
Yes, I knew about the snap ring thing popping out in the 2005 year range. I think Ford even put a TSB out for "snow plow" specific trucks on it also. Everything I saw about it showed it wearing a hole in the passenger side of the case though, not the top. It does appear to be in the same "plane" as where the holes normally appear in the side of the case, so I'm sure that's what it was. The crazy thing is I've been trying to track down that leak for the last 50k. I'm amazed it took this long for other problems to show up. I was loosing less than a quart a month and putting 15k miles on it a year...
Ya... used a mirror and a flash light with a buddy barring the motor over to get them lined up. I was afraid I was going to drop one of those shallow nuts into the no-mans-land of the bellhousing...

The ONP you are referring to is 04B24. That program expired in a March of 2006. The particular vehicles affected were trucks with vehicle build dates from March 8th 2004 to June 24 2004 according to the program. But the funny thing was, I saw a lot of 2005 trucks with this failure that fell outside of the above build date range specified by that program, whose owners ended up having to pay out of pocket for the repair.
m-chan, did you see trans failures with the holes knocked out in the location that mine did it, or on the side of the case?
Also I've done a decent amount of light towing lately (4-5k trailer) and everything seems to be operating as it should with no leaks. So, I'm a happy camper
