I am having the same problem with my truck and just found this info from another forum on this site from a Ford Trany engineer.
Possible causes: low fluid, loose/missing internal filter, worn pump or leaking internal seals.

Hope that helps you. It has given me some stuff to check.

yes I found out what it was so I pulled the trans pan and it was that the filter was laying in the bottom of the pan so I installed a new one and put new fluid in it and now it is perfect goes into reverse with out dieing and even shifts very smoth also so that is what is wrong with yours also

Thanks for the results davepart3. The F150 5sp 5L does a little bit of the same thing.
I think I have lower fuel pressure (28PSI) and had some vac leaks. I fixed most of the vac leaks and it a bit better now.

I am gonna check my IAC valve, my truck is stalling in reverse when it is warm, already serviced the tranny with new fluid, new filter and gasket.
