Exhaust manifold. Next best is in uppipe just after connection at manifold.

Bottom rear of the drivers side manifold is supposed to be the best place to put a single probe for an average of both banks. It's also an easy spot to get to for drilling.

I would due manifold before the up pipes. More metal to thread and seal better.

I have to disagree..that is the best place but for only dr side bank..1 EGT is good for watching over all engine temp on a good running motor, If you have an issue on the passanger side, you will never know (ask me how I know).. Personally I suggest 2 EGT gauges, one on each side, installed in the manifolds..

Maybe I should have phrased that differently. If you install only one temperature probe, then that location is your best one to see an average of both banks. There was a thread a while back where someone had installed probes on both sides, with one at the location I pictured above, and the variation between the two sides was negligible. Now, as you stated, if there is an issue with one bank, then two probes would undoubtedly direct you to the problem. But the intents and purposes of that are different from what the OP seems to be seeking.

Put it in the manifold. I originally had mine in the down pipe and it was 2-300* cooler in the down pipe so you have to allow for that, and your guessing at best.

might seem stranger, but what about the babyies but area?

I understand most of you can't access that area like I can, but that is where they both come together before the exhaust???

just a random thought.

I can't afford to have two right now anyway let along space in any mounts I plan on getting.

As long as it's pre-turbo then you're good. It will work just fine. Anything post turbo is completely useless.
