This furniture was from the '60s and extremely heavy.

About 1700 lbs of pressure-treated lumber, and then 5 people and 2 dogs going to the cabin for the weekend. The weight wasn't an issue for my '97 F-250 F-250HD CCSB, but fitting everything on top of the lumber and under the topper wasn't going to happen. With 12' boards loaded into a short bed there was too much overhang to pull a trailer. Or was there? I have a step that goes in my receiver hitch for when I'm carrying the slide-in camper. The step has a receiver on the rear (I use it to carry a bike rack with the camper). This is the first time I tried pulling a trailer using the step as a hitch extension. It worked fine.

But it was a sunny day, with temps in the mid- to upper 70s and we needed to take an empty pontoon trailer to my folks cabin and bring the boat home. Let's see, 3 hours sitting in an air conditioned pickup or 4 hours in an open-top Bronco? That was a easy choice! (even though the pickup would have handled the load better)

If you were on pirate off-road forum you would win the big dumb load of the day thread. Hope you didn't go far! I'm surprised your tailgate cables held up!

Cedar lumber loaded up for delivery from my brother-in-law's sawmill. Those 2x6's on the bottom are 14 footers, so they only extending 4 feet past the end of the gate.

I traveled all of about 100 feet; top speed of 5MPH. My next-door neighbor is moving and cleaning out his over-stuffed garage. There actually wasn't much of a load on the tailgate. The lumber-shims were put in there by hand.

I'll have to get a picture of the truck and trailer combo tomorrow to post up, didn't have time to take a pic since the dead Super Duty was blocking a lane of the highway.

But, my uncle called me because he ran his 1999 7.3 truck out of fuel and after dumping in 5 gallons it still failed to start. So I ran to where he was and clevised a 20 foot strap to his tow point and clevised the other end to my 150 and drug the crew cab and 18 foot tandem axle dump trailer 6 miles back to his shop. Got down the highway and on to a side road only went 20 mph and used the trailer brakes to slow the whole circus train. But with that load at 20 mph the old 302 had to have the 5 speed in third to have enough rpm to keep from lugging.

My 1994 F-350 XLT CC Dually. 7.3L IDI Turbo, E40D

The first camper is our 29' 5th wheel (1998 StarCraft LeisureStar 29CK) weight: about 6,500lbs loaded)
Hitch: Reese 16K 5th Wheel hitch

The second is our current camper, a 34' bumper pull. (1990 Fleetwood Prowler Regal 34K) weight: about 8,750lbs loaded
Hitch: Curt V-5 6,000lb weight carrying- 12,000lb weight distributing receiver hitch
and 12,000lb rated equalizer hitch w/ dual sway control (I am using 10,000lb equalizer bars though, due to the 12,000lb bars being too stiff for the load... tows beautifully)

And yes, the truck is shinier in the first pic... I had just polished it. In the second pic, the 5th wheel is removed and I have my 1994 Leer Knight Topper mounted. The truck was definitely due for a re-polish though.

Truck is stock, with the exception of an electric brake controller, a 25,000lb GVWR rated HD transmission oil cooler, and a 3-core Severe Duty Aluminum Radiator (I highly recommend this mod, I tow in 100+deg heat with the A/C on, and never get even halfway into the temp gauge.)
