I finally have gotten to testing my controller. I verified that I can read the MLPS (analog) and TPS. I calibrated the MLPS, so the controller will select the right gear. I then started the motor, and went through the gears at idle. All gears seem to be in the right place, including drive. I really am not sure that it's in drive, but it does go forward with the shifter in Drive position.

The next step is to calibrate the TPS, so the EPC current is set correctly. Then I need to get it on the highway to verify the VSS reading. The VSS needs to be calibrated to get the shift points right.

The EPC current and VSS reading are the most critical parts.

I am getting Zero RPM reading from the VSS. I know that the VSS pickup is OK, but my circuit or software has something wrong.

I can't debug it on the Highway, and it's difficult to do it on the truck, even if I jack up the rear wheels.

I'm going to get a gear driven VSS and use a power drill to turn it. Then I can run the controller on a bench, and check the circuit with an oscilloscope.

This was a winter project, but I had some delays, and now it's spring. I have more things going on and can't put as much time into this project.

However, I solved the VSS problem. I obtained a gear driven VSS, and set it up on a bench with a drill to drive it. That allowed me to find & fix the problem. Now VSS should work in the truck.

I took the truck out with the new controller, and found that the trans is in 3rd gear, when I put it into Drive. There may be an error in the Interface adapter cable that I built. I have to check that out. I also found a problem in the software. The solenoids didn't get initialzed to 1st gear, when the MLPS indicates drive. I changed the software to correct that, but I have the Baumann Comtroller installed now. I'll continue to check the new controller in the '83.

This project didn't die, but other thing were more pressing. I did some more work on it lately. It does seem to be able to switch the solenoids. The biggest problem that I have is with the VSS. I have that working with a VSS sensor on the bench, but when I put it into the truck and turn the truck power on, engine not running, there is noise triggering the VSS Zero Crossing Detector in my unit. The extra triggering of the VSS makes the processor think the output shaft is turning very fast. This occurs when standing still.

I might have to redo my VSS circuit, but I want to see if I can get a copy of the Ford VSS circuit.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I redesigned my VSS receiver circuit. It eliminated the noise problem.
I still do not get a correct speed reading from the VSS. I think that this is just a software problem. The hardware seems to be working. I'll be doing some debugging this week.
I have not tested the EPC control yet. I'll do that after I finish the VSS.

The good news is that now the trans will shift from 1st to 2nd in Drive. The bad news is that is will immediatly shift back into 1st.

I am sure that this is a shift table problem. I adjusted the 1st gear Upshift table, but didn't change the 2nd gear Downshift table.

This is a significant forward step. It means that I am on the right track. I'll work on the shift tables later this week.

What did you end up using for pressure control? Your current limiting circuit or PWM?

My project is stalled - too much work right now.

The good news is I picked up an EFI 460 and E4OD to use vs the 351...

I'm using the Current Control circuit, but I'm thinking now that the PWM will work just as well.

I want to find out if Ford actually changed the EPC in the trans, when they went to PWM, or just changed the controller.

The EPC has always been current control, never PWM. The torque converter clutch solenoid went to PWM in 1999.

I simply energize the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid for Lockup above certain RPM.

Mark, I understand Ford's system was always current control. Megashift uses PWM and I had asked a while ago if that would work. I intend to try it when I get to that point but it's going to be a little bit off...

My prototype board is a little crude. I am starting to layout a PC board. As soon as I'm confident in the design, I'll order some boards.

PWM requires fewer parts than the Current Control. I'll lay the board out so that I can just jumper between EPC Current Control & PWM.

I have the PC board layed out, but there are a couple of corrections that need to be made to the trace net.

Right now, I'm working on a new computer. I have to get all of my tools & files transfered, so I don't have to disconnect & reconnect when I want to do something.

Well can't wait til you figure it out

BTW, IDK if you knew, there are a couple of free CAD programs to help you lay out circuit boards etc. The one I've used is called TinyCAD. It's free.
